Losing weight by preventing some of the dietary fats from being absorbed by your body can be an easy support to weight loss. Although all medical advice is to change your diet and lifestyle to lose weight, a fat binder is a quick way to instantly reduce your fat intake without making drastic changes. Rasva contains KiOnutrime-Cs as the active ingredient, a formula based on Chitosan and made from natural fungus extracts.
Rasva is a very credible looking diet pill that is on sale in the High Street and from various online retailers including Amazon. We like the fact that it can be bought in the shops and that the good looking website is understated and appears packed full of information.
The way that Rasva works is by preventing some of your dietary fats and cholesterol from being absorbed by your body. The diet pills contain a fibre-based gel that according to the manufacturers will bind with these dietary fats and create a non-soluble compound. This then passes through your body naturally as a waste product. This works in the same way as the better-known Alli although the active ingredient is not the same.
The formula KiOnutrime C is the active ingredient. It is based on Chitosan, which is a natural substance usually derived from crustacean shells such as crabs and shrimps. This version of Chitosan is the only vegetarian Chitosan available and is made by Clavis an Italian company, who have created this version of Chitosan from Aspergillus Niger Mycelium a natural fungus high in vitamin C.
Chitosan is a controversial substance when it comes to weight management and weight loss. There is a general belief that it may help with limiting fat absorption however, there is conflicting evidence that suggest that it does not. Further research is necessary in order to prove its efficacy but the formula conforms fully to European safety standards. EFSA as per Article 13.1 of regulation 1924/2006 on health benefits.
To use Rasva, take 2-3 capsules twice a day 15 minutes before your meals ensuring that you drink plenty of water to avoid constipation. You are also encouraged to take a vitamin supplement to make sure your vitamin levels and fatty acids are not lost due to the action of the pills. You need to take Rasva for at least 2 meals a day and in most cases for only 4 weeks.
Rasva is manufactured in Belgium by KitoZyme SA and is marketed by Famous Rainbow in Ireland who deal directly with Holland & Barrett.
- Chitosan has been proven not to help weight loss
- May aggravate stomach and bowel conditions
- Customer feedback largely negative
What Does Rasva Claim To Do?
Rasva claims to offer the following benefits.
- Reduces fat absorption from food.
- Supports a weight reduction diet in cases of excess weight through reduced fat absorption from food. A treatment for excess weight.
- Weight control as part of a controlled fat conscious diet.
- Reduces cholesterol absorption from food.
According to the Rasva website, excess weight is often caused by a high fat diet such as processed meat products, cheese, fast food and high fat snacks. Because fats are high in energy, “these foods often provide the body with more calories than it needs – the excess energy is stored in fat deposits”.
The advice that the website offers make sense. It states,
Conscious nutrition requires a moderate intake of fats and carbohydrates combined with a sufficient intake of vitamins and minerals. Physical activity additionally increases calorie consumption and breaks down fat deposits
The Rasva website does not really make the wild claims that can be seen by so many slimming pills, which is a point in its favour. In addition, there is a lot of information about how to take the diet pills, how they work and technical information. However, there is very little real information about how much weight you can expect to lose and what percentage of your fat will be eliminated by your body. The problem with the Rasva advertising is that you really do not have any indication of results or how it actually works. The advertising blinds you with science and it looks convincing yet leaves you none the wiser after reading it.
So What Is Rasva and What Are The Ingredients For Rasva?
Rasva is a fat binder that contains just one active ingredient – a trademarked formula based on Chitosan and the few other ingredients are simply there for manufacturing purposes and make up the composition of the capsule.
Chitosan has been tested for its role in the prevention of fat absorption and although it has become popular within the weight loss market and some tests have suggested that it may have some effect, according to medical opinion results remain inconclusive. It has its supporters but there is no firm evidence that it really works.
According to its supporters, Chitosan attracts and binds dietary fats into a fibrous compound, which are then too large to be absorbed as fat. Instead, they pass through the body as waste so does not add to your body weight.
In molecular terms, Chitosan is a polysaccharide that is a type of carbohydrate composed of D-glucosamine and D-glucosamine and is a naturally occurring substance found in crab and shrimp shells.
This variant of Chitosan is made from a fungus Aspergillus Niger Mycelium, which are a natural mould and the same black mould as you see in damp houses. According to the manufacturers, it works in exactly the same way as the seafood-derived version of Chitosan but is an option suitable for vegetarians and people who are sensitive to seafood.
- Each Rasva capsule contains 500 mg of KiOnutrime-Cs Chitosan (biopolymer N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and D-glucosamine) derived from Aspergillus Niger mycelium.
- Magnesium Stearate – a chalk like substance contained in many supplements and added to help the manufacture process – it helps prevent ingredients from sticking together during mixing and compression. There have been some health concerns about this ingredient but below 2500 mg per day, it is recognised as safe by the FDA so is not of concern here.
- Silica a natural chemical compound
- The capsule is made from Hypromellose (HPMC) a semi synthetic polymer that has a function similar to gelatine but is suitable for vegetarians.
So What Does All This Mean?
Although Rasva looks like a reputable and well thought out slimming pill and appears to be backed by clinical proof, the benefits of taking Chitosan as a fat binder are questionable.
Yes, there have been clinical tests and the positive effects have been cited as proof but the high numbers of clinical test results that prove the exact opposite have been ignored. There are also many health conditions that will make this unsuitable.
In addition, Rasva does not interact well with other medicines and if you are taking oral contraception or HRT, for example you will have to ensure that four hours have passed between taking Rasva and taking these other medications. It is easy to see that mistakes could easily be made with this.
Does Rasva Have Any Side Effects?
Fat binders can have unpleasant side effects and Rasva is no exception. Expect increased bowel movements, diarrhoea and loose bowel movements. Taking the pills with insufficient water can lead to constipation.
People with sensitive stomachs may experience vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, stomach aches or constipation.
Caution: You should avoid if you are pregnant or breast-feeding or if you suffer from any of the following conditions: acid reflux, duodenal ulcers, Crohn’s Disease, diverticulitis, colitis, intestinal polyps, digestive disorders or any inflammatory disorders of the gastro intestinal tract.
Any Rasva Reviews From Customers?
Customer response has been mixed about Rasva but the negatives outweigh the positives. Many consumers have stated that it does not work and that they have not noticed any difference nor lost weight. One customer said,
I haven’t seen any difference whatsoever. There has been zero weight loss despite me being very overweight
This customer questioned Holland & Barrett and was advised to try a different product.
Very disappointed with this product only lost 1lb !!!.
I have been taking this tablet for 4 weeks now, it is a load of rubbish” are among other feedback comments.
However one customer reported losses of 10lb;
EVERYTHING IS FIRST CLASS DELIVERED NEXT DAY NO WORRIES BEST FOR ADULTS TO SHIFT THOSE POUNDS YOU HAVE GOT HANGING AROUND
So Does Rasva Work?
We don’t think that it does work for most people. It all comes down to the active ingredient Chitosan and there have been lots of clinical tests and trials into Chitosan as a fat binder. Results are not encouraging.
According to a double blind trial of Chitosan for body weight reduction carried out by the University of Exeter, the conclusion was that;
Chitosan in the administered dosage, without dietary alterations, does not reduce body weight in overweight subjects. No serious adverse effects were reported.
Testing carried out by the Dept of Nutrition from the University of California looking into Chitosan as a fat binder concluded, The fat binding claims associated with Chitosan are unsubstantiated.
The clinical trials research unit from the University of Auckland carried out a 24-week trial of Chitosan on 250 people and found that;
Chitosan treatment did not result in a clinically significant loss of body weight compared with placebo.
Where Can I Buy Rasva?
UK customers can buy Rasva from Holland & Barrett from their online store or their many retail outlets on the High Street. It is also available from Amazon as well as various online slimming stores.
60 capsules or a months supply costs £16.24 in the UK and in general, you can make savings on larger orders. However the price is much higher for customers in the USA. The same bottle of 60 capsules costs $70 if you buy from Amazon making this fairly low cost supplement extremely expensive.
What About A Guarantee
There is no money back guarantee.
Rasva looks convincing at first glance especially if you read the advertising and product information, but the big problem is that the active ingredient does not work. Chitosan is a controversial ingredient when it comes to weight loss and the major body of medical opinion is in agreement that it is completely ineffective. It is not safe if you suffer from gastric problems and it may interfere with important medication such as HRT and oral contraceptives.
Rasva is extremely expensive for US customers so is not a good deal if you live outside the UK and Europe.
We cannot see how Rasva can work if the majority of clinical testing proves otherwise. Despite the glossy and professional website and the medical looking information, the basic flaw with this slimming pill is that it does not work in the way as described. It does not bind fat so it’s unlikely to help you lose weight.
