Active Woman Refine Facts

  • Active Woman Refine is made in the UK
  • Bio Synergy is a respected supplements company. Lord Sebastian Coe is a shareholder
  • British model and celeb Mel Sykes is the poster girl for this supplement

Active Woman Refine is as the name suggests, a diet pill aimed at women. Model Mel Sykes is pictured on the supplement container so the message is that this diet pill may help you look as fit and healthy as she does.

However, there is nothing in this supplement that is particularly gender specific apart from the name. In fact, Active Woman Refine contains three ingredients that regularly show up in body builder supplements aimed principally at men, so this supplement will suit men just as well as women.

The principle ingredient is CLA – conjugated Linoleic Acid – often marketed as a way to build muscle and there is some evidence that it may help reduce body fat. CLA is a group of unsaturated omega six compounds found in dairy products, meat and eggs.

The stimulant firepower is provided by Yerba mate. This is a South American herbal extract often drunk as a tea in countries like Brazil and Paraguay. It contains high levels of caffeine so is an alternative to coffee with a similar effect.

If you are sensitive to caffeine, this supplement will not suit you. We feel this information should have been more prominently placed in the product advertising because this is not made clear.

The final ingredient is L Carnitine an amino acid that helps the body convert fat into energy. Your body makes this substance in the kidneys and liver and stores it in the muscles, heart and brain. It is also obtainable by diet.

L Carnitine may have an effect upon the metabolism and muscle development and is often included in bodybuilder and sports supplements for this reason.

How to Take Active Woman Refine

Take 2 capsules daily before an early mealtime with a glass of water.

Do not exceed recommended dose.

As Refine contains a source of caffeine, we advise not to take after 4pm.

Active Woman Refine is made by Bio Synergy, a British company that specialises in sports nutrition. All supplements are manufactured in the UK and conform to health and safety standards.

The company was founded in 1997 in order to support the goals of athletes and fitness enthusiasts and has some high profile teams and athletes as ambassadors for the company. These include James Cracknell, – British rowing champion and Olympic gold medal winner, racing driver David Coulthard, the Irish and British Lions international rugby teams and more.

Model and celebrity Mel Sykes is the poster girl for Active Woman Refine and appears on the bottle.

Bio Synergy has some impressive credentials. Lord Sebastian Coe was once the company chairman and is still a shareholder. According to him, the company ethos is clear. He is quoted as saying,

Our aim is to be the number one sports nutrition company in the world.

The company produce a wide range of supplements to support sports nutrition, health and weight loss as well as a range aimed specifically at women, such as this one.

We covered Bio Synergy Body Perfect – a weight loss supplement in a previous review and although we did not add it to the approved list, there were plenty of good points in its favour.

Active Woman Refine Concerns:

  • You may find that this supplement is a waste of money. It does not seem to work for everyone
  • Contains caffeine but will customers realise?
  • Expensive for customers in the USA

What Does Active Woman Refine Claim To Do?

According to the product advertising,

Active Woman Refine is a powerful new ally in the war on weight.

And is,

Packed with essential fat-fighting nutrients like CLA, Yerba Mate, and L-Carnitine.

The three ingredients are explained,

  • CLA Targets Fat Deposits: CLA is a natural omega acid that targets fat deposits for conversion into energy.
  • Yerba Mate Boosts Metabolism: Yerba Mate stimulates your metabolism and contains antioxidants for quick fat loss.
  • Increase Your Thermobolic Fat Burning: L-Carnitine is a micronutrient that assists in fat burning at the cellular level, transporting fat to be burned into energy.

There are seven key points to this supplement:

  • Fat-torching capsules
  • Boost your metabolism
  • Stops sugar cravings
  • Natural ingredients
  • Easy & convenient to use
  • Sculpt your body
  • Noticeable results within 1 month

None of these claims are backed up with any explanation or scientific evidence.

So What Is Active Woman Refine and What Are The Ingredients?

Active Woman Refine is a weight loss supplement that can be classified as a fat burner. Each serving is equal to two capsules. Amounts here are per serving and not per capsule.

  • CLA (1600mg): This is the principle ingredient. Conjugated Linoleic Acid refers to a group of fatty acid chemicals found in meat and dairy products derived from ruminant animals. CLA is high in omega 6 fatty acids.
According to Bio Synergy, “a study published in the Journal of Nutrition on the effects of CLA on the body, showed a daily intake of 3.4g of CLA produced an average 9% reduction in body fat mass. However not all evidence for CLA is as positive. Many human studies of CLA have produced contradictory results, and it is described as not only a relatively poor fat burner, but also an unreliable one. There are some health concerns about taking high levels of omega 6. Some research suggests that excessive levels of Omega 6 are bad for health if taken in excess of other fatty acid complex omega 3. In the Western diet, most of us get plenty of omega 6 from our diet but lack omega 3, which is present in fish and vegetables.
  • Yerba Mate (400mg): This natural South American plant contains antioxidants (as do all natural plants) and is used to make a stimulant beverage similar to coffee. In fact, it contains more caffeine than coffee so the effects of yerba mate are principally caused by the stimulant effects of the caffeine. According to Bio Synergy, this ingredient stimulates your metabolism. Caffeine does have this effect but can wear off once you become accustomed to it. However, it is great for perking you up and providing a quick energy boost.
  • L Carnitine: Amino acid that helps the body convert fat into energy. Your body makes this substance in the kidneys and liver and stores it in the muscles, heart and brain. This may play a role in the treatment of cancer and it may have an effect upon the metabolism and muscle development. Taking L Carnitine supplements can be effective for some medical conditions including depression and elderly memory loss but there is no evidence that it improves weight loss or exercise performance.

So What Does All This Mean?

If you are active and take part in sport or training Active Woman Refine may help you convert fat into muscle although your own efforts will probably do this without any need for supplementation.

The results for CLA are not really proven. Some evidence suggests it works; other clinical research has not provided the same positive results so we guess the scientific jury is still out on this particular ingredient.

You will probably notice the stimulant effect of Yerba Mate. The product information does not provide the caffeine amount but at 400mg per dose, it is likely to provide at least the equivalent of a cup of coffee (approximately 100mg per cup) and maybe more.

Does Active Woman Refine Have Any Side Effects?

Bio Synergy have not provided any health warnings, beyond mentioning caffeine as an ingredient. Customers have not mentioned side effects either in the limited number of feedback comments left for Active Woman Refine. However, judging by the ingredients there may be some mild side effects.

  • Heartburn
  • L Carnitine can cause a fishy odour of breath, sweat and urine.
  • CLA can cause fatigue but this may be countered by the caffeine content.
  • Caffeine comes with some well-known stimulant side effects including: Anxiety, insomnia, jitteriness and headaches.

Any Active Woman Refine Reviews From Customers?

We could only find a handful of customer reviews for Active Woman Refine and opinion is mixed. Some customers are very satisfied with this supplement. One lady reported,

Very pleased with these been taking them for 3 months. I cycle over 180 miles a week and these help with energy and I burn fat faster.

Another customer felt it not only helped her lose weight but reduced her cellulite too,

I have now been taking these for 7 months and have lost a stone in weight, as I was only 9.7 stone I didn’t have a lot to lose……When I gain weight it tends to be on my bottom and legs which gives me terrible cellulite, but after taking the pills … I can honestly say it has improved enormously.

She was not the only customer to mention cellulite,

Great service and great vitamins, they give you an energy boost and help with the appearance of orange peel.

Not everyone is as pleased,

Doesn’t do a thing I won’t be buying again. Don’t waste your money.

Bought these with great anticipation only to be massively disappointed! Would not buy again as they did absolutely nothing to help aid my weight loss.

So Does Active Woman Refine Work?

It might work. Most of the small number of feedback comments are extremely positive. They come from people who do not have much weight to lose and are already active so this may improve results. This does fit in with the athletic ethos of this company. We like that it seems to improve cellulite.

However, we are concerned about taking supplements long term – one customer has already taken them for 7 months and she seems to have an intensive regime that may not require the support of a supplement anyway.

There have been numerous clinical tests into CLA the principle ingredient. Some evidence looks promising but there are conflicting results. One test carried out on 180 volunteers over a year saw significant fat loss.

Another test carried out under the same conditions, found that CLA supplementation for 1 year does not prevent weight or fat mass regain in a healthy obese population.

Both tests used healthy, slightly obese volunteers, taking a daily dose of 3-4g CLA each day, which is more than contained in the daily serving of Active Woman Refine.

Our opinion is that CLA requires more evidence before it can be guaranteed to help fat loss.

Watchdog Verdict

Active Woman Refine has the look of a good quality supplement. It comes from a respected sports nutrition company that has an impressive background and credentials. Bio Synergy is backed by Lord Coe and endorsed by some well-known athletes and celebrities – the impression is that this a reputable British company who will not rip you off.

However, we are less impressed with the supplement. Active woman Refine contains CLA as its principle ingredient and although this comes with some clinical testing to prove the claims, there is a lot of conflicting evidence that says the exact opposite. Some scientists have dismissed the effects of CLA as unreliable and this seems like an accurate description.

Active Woman Refine looks fairly safe and most people will not suffer from side effects. That said there are some concerns about taking omega 6 supplements (present in CLA) without omega 3 to balance this out and this point does require further investigation.

There is some positive feedback but these comments seem to have been left by people who are already fit and athletic. Will it work if you do not fall into this category? We are not so sure it will.

On balance, there are just too many negative points about Active Woman Refine for us to add to our Approved list, so we have no other option but to reject it.
