Most of us love a good drink every now and again, whether it’s going out at the end of the week to unwind with friends or having a glass of wine at dinner. We all enjoy it.
Sure, there are risks that come with it, but there are also some benefits that can help us live our lives to the fullest. It just depends on what you drink and how often you drink it. Of course it varies for different people, we’ve all had that friend that gets tipsy after one drink, so you should always be aware of what your body can handle and the effect it will have.

Drinking in moderation has a few benefits that you should know about.
Lowers the risk of Cardiovascular Disease
By drinking moderate amounts of alcohol you can raise your level of HDL (High-density lipoprotein), which is your good cholesterol, offering greater protection against heart disease. It can cause you to have better sensitivity to insulin and improvements in areas that influence blood clotting. This helps to prevent the blood clots blocking the arteries in the heart, neck and brain, which often cause strokes.
Lengthens your lifespan
Drinking little amounts of alcohol with your meals could reduce the risk of premature death by 18%, however you mustn’t have it with every meal in the day.
Helps protect you against the common cold
In nonsmokers it has been found that drinking alcohol can decrease the number of common cold cases in adults, mainly wine as it contains antioxidant properties.
Decreases the chances of developing dementia
Alcohol has been tested in studies to show that moderate drinkers were less likely to develop cognitive impairment due to the effect alcohol has on the brain. It stresses the cells, making them toughen up to cope with stresses that could cause dementia, as we get older.
Arthur Klatsky, MD, a former practicing cardiologist and now an investigator for Kaiser Permanente’s division of research in Oakland, California, has some views on who should be drinking alcohol to help with their health. He says that it would be beneficial for men 40 and older and women 50 and older, as it can only help with heart health then.
However, even though there are positives, there are also negatives to even drinking moderately. Susan Gapstur, PhD, MPH, vice president of epidemiology for the American Cancer Society, Atlanta, said:
We can confidently say that even moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a modestly higher risk for breast and colorectal cancer.
People must assess their own medical history and limit alcohol if there is a risk of developing cancer.
Not only can it be a problem for developing cancer, it acts as an appetite stimulant meaning that you will be more likely to eat more, as reported by Ravi Dave, MD, a cardiologist at Santa-Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital. However, he does go on the suggest that, “In low or moderate amounts, alcohol can cause euphoria and reduction of stress.”
It seems that it all comes down to genetics. Everybody is different and can handle certain amounts of alcohol, but it is never safe to drink all the time, however, a drink here or there with a meal isn’t really doing too much harm.
We don’t suggest that you drink all the time as it will have repercussions but after looking at some of the facts it is clear that when you reach a certain age it can help with your health.
