Below we take an in-depth look at Appe-Curb to see if it can suppress the appetite and aid noticeable weight loss.
Appe-Curb is an appetite suppressing weight loss supplement that supposedly reduces cravings for carbohydrates and improves the consumer’s mood and ‘sense of wellbeing and energy’. The manufacturers also claim that the supplement can help to reduce alcohol and drug cravings.
Chromium is present to support healthy glucose metabolism and support food intake regulation.
Appe-Curb is manufactured by Xymogen. The company are based in Orlando, Florida in the USA and can be contacted using the information provided on their official website.
Bottles of Appe-Curb come in two sizes, 120 capsules or 240 capsules. If using the maximum dose recommended by the manufacturers (8 capsules per day), then a bottle of 120 capsules will last for just 15 days, whilst a bottle of 240 capsules will last for just 30 days of use.
There is also another supplement called Appe-Curb, which is manufactured by NuMedica; This supplement appears to have an identical ingredients list.
Take four capsules before breakfast and four capsules before 3 PM, or use as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Do not take after 3 PM.
The manufacturers make the following claims about how Appe-Curb can benefit the consumer:
The ingredients used in Appe-Curb are listed below. The ingredient quantities listed are per serving of four capsules. Consumers are instructed to take two servings per day, for a total of 8 capsules.
Chromium is proven to aid weight loss, but its effects are tiny and only noticeable in the long run. Doses used in clinical trials vary hugely, but one study showed that carbohydrate cravings were significantly reduced when taking 600 mcg of chromium picolinate daily over an eight week period. If consumers followed up on this reduced level of cravings, and reduced snacking accordingly, then they would find it easier to lose weight whilst using this supplement. Chromium also helps to reduce insulin resistance.
Consumers who have insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes, will have more trouble losing weight because insulin acts as a fat storing hormone. However, the dose of Chromium used in this supplement is only 10% of the dose used in the aforementioned successful clinical trial; in this tiny dose, it is unlikely to have any impact at all upon weight loss.
5-HTP is used by the body to make serotonin, and so could help to boost the consumer’s mood. Tyrosine is often touted as an appetite suppressant, despite there being a lack of clear clinical support for this.
Some of the ingredients found in Appe-Curb could potentially cause a range of side effects.
Chromium can lower blood sugars levels and as such should not be used by diabetics without first consulting their doctor. Low blood sugar levels can lead to light headedness, dizziness and even fainting. Customers who have not eaten for several hours are more likely to experience these side effects.
5-HTP can cause a range of side effects including heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, drowsiness, sexual problems, and muscle problems.
Tyrosine side effects appear to be rare as the supplement is well-tolerated by the body, but can include nausea, headache, fatigue, heartburn, and joint pain.
Consult your healthcare practitioner prior to use if you have, or suspect you have, a medical condition or are taking prescription drugs for depression, migraines, Parkinson’s disease, or psychiatric disorders. Not for use by anyone under the age of 18. Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not use with other dietary supplements containing L-tryptophan, 5-HTP, St. John’s wort, SAMe, or Hawaiian baby woodrose. Do not take if you are, or suspect you are, pregnant or if you are lactating.Diabetics and Hypoglycemics should only use only under a doctor’s supervision because this product contains chromium which may enhance insulin sensitivity and may affect your blood glucose levels.
Although Appe-Curb is no longer available from amazon, there are numerous customer reviews that were left on the sales page for the product.
My nutritionist gave me this for my weight loss program. It helped me get rid of the sweet and carb cravings I have. I weighed in at 156 in Feb 2012 and in July I am now 135. I use this and I track all of my calories on a daily basis not to go over 1200. I am 5 foot 3. This is not a weight loss pill, it just helps you get through the cravings. It really helped me adjust to my new eating habits. It stopped me from over eating as well, I felt full pretty quickly.
Appe-curb work just as advertised, it keeps your cravings in check. I have recommended it to several friends. I get the product from Xymogen and Amazon in a timley and inexpensive way. I have used appe-curb now for 2 years and will continue to do so in the future.
It works and most of all, it was about HALF the price we pay for it locally. But I have to take two at a time.
You can count on xymogen quality too its good for everything they say it does, I notice when i dont take it.
This product didn’t work for me. It was the opposite, almost like an appetite stimulant. The bottle contains only a half month supply and is overpriced.
The effects of chromium supplementation appear to be small, leading to small amounts of weight loss over a prolonged period of use. However, successful studies used much larger doses of Chromium than are present in Appe-Curb.
Consumers who do not change their diets to reflect the changes in their carbohydrate and sugar cravings are not likely to lose any weight whilst using this product. Reducing carbohydrate and sugar cravings could help dieters to stick to their new reduced calorie diets.
The manufacturers of Appe-Curb state on their official website:
Our formulas can only be purchased from a registered XYMOGEN practitioner by logging in to our website with your practitioner’s patient referral code. If you need a XYMOGEN practitioner, we can help!
The pricing information for Appe-Curb is not available until customers sign in.
Xymogen do not state what their returns policy is. On their official website’s FAQ section they state the following:
I bought a product from my doctor, but I was not satisfied and want to return it. What can I do?
Please contact your provider or place of purchase to see what return or exchange options are available.
Appe-curb does have several ingredients that could theoretically help to mildly suppress the appetite and reduce cravings, but the clinical evidence is incredibly mixed. Chromium does have clinical support, but it appears to only have a tiny effect upon weight loss even when used over a prolonged period of time. The amounts used in successful clinical trials are also much greater than the amounts found in Appe-Curb.
The supplement is also likely to be ineffective if the consumer does not alter their dietary habits to match their newly suppressed appetite; the supplement could theoretically help consumers to stick to a lower calorie diet, but it will not aid significant weight loss on its own.
The manufacturers do not allow customers to purchase directly from the website without a ‘patient referral code’, and they do not even provide a price list. This leaves customers vulnerable to third party price hikes. Because of this policy, they also do not state what their returns policy is, instructing consumers to contact the seller that they purchased the product from. This is again, another sales tactic that protects the company’s interests and can leave dissatisfied customers out of pocket.
Overall, we do not recommend Appe-Curb to our readers.
