Below we take an in-depth look at Ballerina Tea to see whether it is an effective weight loss aid, or merely a potent laxative that causes side effects and short-term, temporary weight loss.
Dieter’s Drink Bebida Dietetica, also known as Ballerina Tea, is a laxative tea that has a single ingredient, Senna. Whilst this laxative should be used solely to treat constipation, it is marketed and used as a weight loss aid. Consumers report that the product is incredibly strong, its use leading to several hours or even days lost to dedicated bathroom time. Internet reviewers are split between a love-hate relationship and a pure hate relationship with this tea. Whilst the product is incredibly strong and impractical, consumers report immediate weight loss, and a burst of energy several days after consumption.
It is not clear who the manufacturers of this tea are; seemingly it is manufactured by a Chinese company and is distributed widely in the UK and USA, with it being available at numerous online retailers, as well as being available in many Chinese health stores, supermarkets and health and supplement stores.
In response to some consumers believing that less calories will be absorbed into the system because this product will speed up the digestive process so much; senna only stimulates the large intestines, and so food will still be properly digested in the stomach, with nutrients and calories being primarily absorbed through the small intestines.
Taking laxative products when the consumer does not have constipation is a bad idea in general. As well as the negative health effects of regularly taking laxatives, there is also the huge problem of the impractical results. With consumers stating that they were going to the bathroom for prolonged visits anywhere between three and 10 times a day, with one consumer noting that they made 9 bathroom visits in one night, using this ‘diet’ tea will definitely interfere with your daily routine. Even consumers who drink the tea in the afternoon or evening to minimise disruption to their day are going to be sleep deprived as they will inevitably have to visit the bathroom several times throughout the night.
Certainly, it seems that this product is an effective laxative. However, as a weight loss aid, it will not provide long term results, or affect the fat stores in the body in any way whatsoever. Any weight lost whilst using this product is going to be from lost water weight and bowel movements, and so could easily be put back on when the product is no longer being used.
Use a fresh tea bag each time. Brew the bag in a cup of boiling water for 2-5 minutes. Drink when warm (honey may be added to sweeten the taste). One tea bag for two cups of water per day is recommended for first time users. Consumer can reduce to one cup of water per day after one week.
Different third party sellers of this product list different benefits of the tea.
One eBay seller writes the following:
Food such as ice cream, fried chicken, butter, steak and cake may have excessive fat deposits. The Natural Leaf Brand Dieters’ Drink can be effective in removing excessive fat deposits in the body by causing extra bowel movements.
This is misleading, as laxatives will not affect fat deposits in the body at all.
One amazon sellers writes:
It is an herbal dietary supplement for both men and women. This tea cleanses your body from excessive deposits and fat, because of this it might cause a slight stomach cramping at first.
Yet another amazon sales page state that:
This product is for:
- Weight loss;
- Detoxification of your digestive system;
- Relieve constipation;
- Fast and effective way to help you keep slim and losing weight by reducing body’s blood fat and cholesterol level;
- Improves metabolism;
- As well as softens bowel movement and cleansing your body.
- 100% herbal ingredients.
The same website also describes the product as ‘green tea’ despite the product containing only senna, and so green tea at all.
There is only one ingredient used in Bebida Dietetica, which is senna. Because this product is a tea, and therefore an infusion, it is very difficult to regulate the amount of active ingredients per cup of tea. Altering brewing time will alter the strength of the tea, and customers may have to use trial and error to establish how long to brew the tea to obtain the best results without serious side effects occurring.
With the only ingredient in this diet tea being senna, the beverage is going to be a strong laxative. Despite the claims made by the various sellers of the product, Ballerina Tea will not boost the metabolism, or affect fat deposits in the body. It will not affect cholesterol levels.
It will increase bowel movements, and may cause severe constipation. It will initially cause weight loss because of the loss of water and faecal matter from the body. Senna causes the muscle walls of the large intestine to contract, which can be uncomfortable or even painful. Side effects are listed in detail below.
Senna is a stimulant laxative; sennosides, the active ingredient in senna, are activated by natural bacteria in the large intestine. These then stimulate the nerve endings in the large intestine, causing the muscles in the intestinal wall to contract, encouraging movement through the bowels. This can cause painful stomach cramps.
The most common side effect of taking a laxative product is a change in bowel habits. Some people may experience frequent loose stools and increased bowel movements, while others may find that their bowel movements stop completely. Dehydration is also a common side effect, as the body is expelling more water from increased bowel movements. Headaches and constipation are two side effects that may occur due to dehydration. Some people may experience diarrhoea, depending upon their own diet as well as the strength of the product they are using.
Customer feedback for Ballerina Tea suggests that diarrhoea is incredibly common, because the product is seemingly very strong.
Over-reliance upon laxatives can also cause dependency, as the muscles in the colon become weaker. This is one of the main reasons why the product is only for occasional or short term use. Senna should not be used for more than 7 days at a time.
In general, side effects of laxatives are temporary, and will only last whilst the product is being used. Side effects can be minimised by drinking plenty of water throughout the day (rather than a large amount all at once), and altering the dosage of the product used. Altering your diet may also help, by increasing the amount of high-fibre foods, fruit and vegetables that are being eaten daily. It is better to change diet habits and prevent constipation in this manner, rather than treating regularly occurring constipation and dietary problems with laxatives.
Perhaps the most serious worry of using laxatives is that they can cause an electrolyte imbalance in the body. Calcium, chlorine, magnesium, phosphate, potassium, and sodium are all obtained from fluids, supplements, and foods, but increasing fluid output can decrease their levels in the body- even sweating due to exercise can significantly lower electrolyte levels. Side effects of low levels of electrolytes include muscle cramps, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, trembling, muscle weakness, and stiff or aching joints. In the most severe cases, more serious symptoms can occur, such as low blood pressure, tachycardia (rapid heart rate), sunken eyes, confusion or loss of consciousness for even a brief moment, and poor skin elasticity. If any of these occur, a medical professional should be consulted immediately.
Women who are taking the contraceptive pill should be aware that the use of laxatives can interfere with the absorption of the tablet, which could obviously reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive. Other medications may also be affected by this problem.
Do not exceed recommended dose. This product contains senna. This product is not suitable for pregnant or nursing mothers or children under the age of 18. Do not use this product if you have abdominal pain, diarrhoea or loose stools. Rectal bleeding and/or failure to have a bowel movement after the use of a laxative formula may be an indication of a more serious condition. Should this occur, or if you have a known medical condition and are taking medication, consult your physician prior to taking this or any dietary supplement. Laxatives can interfere with the absorption of medications, including the contraceptive pill and antibiotics. Long term use may cause serious side effects.
Customers reviews and feedback are easy to find for this product. Relying upon the star ratings of this product, rather than the actual feedback is not advised, as customers mention numerous side effects and general unpleasant effects of the tea, describe how unpleasant it is to use, and then often leave a five star rating because of the results of the tea. Numerous customers ignore serious side effects that are symptoms of serious dehydration, because they have experienced some weight loss.
This tea really works but it’s too bad it gives me stomach cramp before rushing me to the bathroom.
Bought this tea as have been struggling with my weight after hurting my leg DO NOT BUY really bad stomach cramps very bad diarrhoea stomach is really bad next day like its on fire.
I fainted twice on the toilet after taking this tea. It was given to me to try by my sister and mum who loves this product and swear by it. I had severe diahorrea and cramp. Recovered quickly. One Teabag, one time only. I will not try it again.
Highly recommend, the taste is terrible but it sure does help. After you drink it you need to expect to be staying in the toilet for a while lol
Having used more expensive teas I thought I would try this as it was a lot more affordable… Personally I think this is just a very strong laxative. It left me with agonising cramps and a lot of time spent running to a toilet! (sorry for a little too much information!). The more expensive brands I previously tried made me feel like I’d had a proper ‘clear out’ but without the terrible pains and fears of leaving the house in case of a toilet emergency! It might suit some, but this one is not for me, sorry!
It appears that Dieter’s Drink Bebida Dietetica is a very effective laxative. As for long term weight loss, it is most likely ineffective, as the product does not affect fat mass in the body.
The product will cause temporary short term weight loss, but this weight will quickly be regained when the consumer stops using the tea and rehydrates and eats a few meals. This product is also not suitable for long term use of more than 7 days at a time. We recommend that this should only be used to treat severe constipation.
This product is sold both under the name of Dieter’s Drink Bebida Dietetica, and Ballerina Tea. It is sold on amazon and ebay, with multiple sellers offering the product.
Prices seem to vary, although delivery charges tend to average prices out; on the UK amazon site, a box of 18 teabags sells for £3.78 with delivery costing £3.80, or £7.62 with free prime delivery. On the US amazon site, prices for a pack of 18 teabags vary from $1.99 with delivery costing $4.99, up to $5.45 with free shipping.
Consumers should factor in delivery options when deciding whether to purchase from any individual supplier.
There is no money-back guarantee for this product. Returns policies will vary between individual third party retailers.
Overall, the idea that Ballerina Tea is a safe and viable long term weight loss aid is ridiculous. The product is merely a laxative, and will have no effect whatsoever upon fat mass in the body. It will dehydrate consumers, and cause temporary weight loss by removing the entire contents of their bowels. It is an inconvenient product to use, because of the severity of the results, which can start within 10 minutes of use, or present themselves a few hours later.
The effects of this laxative tea, depending upon the individual constitution of the consumer, can last for several days after use of a single teabag. The product is unsafe for regular use, and should never be used for more than seven days at a time. At best, Ballerina Tea, also known as Bebida Dietetica, is a highly effective treatment for constipation and nothing more.
There is no money back guarantee on the product. The sellers of the product all seem to explain how the product works to aid weight loss in an incorrect and misleading manner, which will give consumers false hope about how the product works.
Whilst some of the customer reviews have been written with a humorous slant, consumers should pay attention to the sheer number of references to unpleasant side effects that are dangerous to the health of the consumer. For example, any mention to muscle aches suggests that the consumer is dangerously dehydrated, and has a very low level of electrolytes in the body- muscle aches are a symptom of both low potassium levels and severe dehydration.
We do not recommend this product to our readers. Consumers who note any of the severe effects detailed in the side effects section should immediately cease using the product, rehydrate, and seek medical advice.
