Calorease is a relatively new diet supplement on the market that the company behind it describe as revolutionary! It is made from super fiber FBCx and works as a fat binder, removing up to 500 calories of dietary fat from your daily intake. It sounds convincing but some customers have been left disappointed. We look into Calorease to find out more.

Fat binders are not a new concept. The idea is that the fibre contained in the pills will eliminate dietary fats that you eat and prevent them from adding to your body fat. This type of diet pill can encourage you to overeat and does not work for everyone.

Calorease Review

Calorease Facts

  • Owned by Soho Flordis International in the US
  • Active ingredient of Calorease is FBCx and is generally regarded as safe (GRAS) by the FDA
  • 180 capsules (1 months supply) costs $49.99

When you are trying to lose weight, it can be hard to keep to a healthy diet in view of so much fattening and unhealthy food around.

Calorease proposes a way to lose weight without needing too much willpower so that you can enjoy some of the foods that you like without adding to your weight.

Calorease contains only one active ingredient, a super fiber called FBCx. This patented formula is described as a naturally sourced fibre derived from corn and according to research and the advertising, is more effective than any other fat binder material available.

Evidence suggests that FBCx can bind up to nine times its own weight in dietary fat (1:9) , compared to the 1:1 caused by other fat binding materials

FBCx is sold under the trade name Calorease owned by Soho Flordis International who were assigned the patent for FBCx in 2012 and launched the brand Calorease in 2013.

Originally, FBCx was marketed by a company called Alpha Fibe. They were the original company selling FBCx supplements back in 2007 and now have a very dated and unconvincing advertising style.

FBCx has become fairly well known in the USA following a mention on the Dr Oz show where he described it as a way for “fat to eat itself” and likely to have a huge “weight loss impact”. It sounds convincing.

As the Calorease advertising explains, cutting out 500 calories of dietary fats from your diet every day and using in combination with a reduced diet and exercise program will make you lose weight.

The advertising claims that this will work out to steady weight loss at around 1.5 pounds a week or 4-6 lbs a month.

Fat binders work in a fairly easy to understand way. The body cannot absorb dietary fat unless it is digested first. Lipase – a digestive enzyme in the small intestine processes the fat that you eat into small pieces where it is broken down and then absorbed by the body as fat.

A fibre such as FBCx will coat these fatty droplets before they are broken down, making them too big for the lipase to process. Instead, this fat complex passes undigested through your body and is eliminated as waste.

FBCx and Calorease will only work on dietary fats. It will not block carbohydrates or sugars from your diet so is not the answer to the complete weight gain problem. However if you eat a lot of fatty foods and are reluctant to change this, you may notice a difference.

The Calorease website is slick and professional and looks reassuringly medical. It publishes some clinical evidence about the trials around FBCx and comes with plenty of information.

How to take Calorease

To use Calorease, take two tablets with a fat-containing meal three times a day.
The recommended daily dose is six tablets each day.

The company advise that you need to keep consistent and not just take the capsules every now and then.

You are advised to take two Calorease tablets only with three meals that each contains at least 18-20 grams of fat.

According to Calorease;

typically, we consume around 100 grams of fat a day. Ideally, you need to spread this fat consumption out over three balanced and nutritious meals

However, we were astounded by the sample meal plans listed on the website because it seems so much food to eat – especially if you are trying to lose weight. Here is a sample breakfast.

  • 2 strips bacon, pan fried
  • 2 large eggs fried in 1 tsp of canola oil
  • 2 slices whole-wheat toast
  • 2 tsp unsalted butter
  • 6 oz tomato juice
  • 8 oz black coffee
  • Total Calories 513
  • 2 Calorease tablets will remove -162 calories
  • Net Total: 351 calories

You must ask yourself whether eating a fried breakfast is a good way of losing weight! In fairness the website does point out that you will not need to take Calorease if you are eating a low fat meal but this delicious sounding breakfast does sound tempting!

Calorease Concerns:

  • Calorease will not help you develop healthy eating habits you can live with long term
  • Calorease is expensive and will not work for everyone
  • Will this supplement give you a license to overeat?

What Does Calorease Claim To Do?

Calorease binds with fat from food to reduce up to 500 calories a day.

You need to note those little words “up to” because this does not necessarily mean you will reduce 500 calories a day, only that you might achieve this (in a going down hill with the wind behind you sort of way).

It is;

stimulant free, heart healthy, naturally sourced and clinically researched

Calorease does not contain stimulants that can often cause unpleasant side effects and put strain upon the heart. Losing weight is good for your heart and FBCx has been clinically researched so we agree with all these claims

According to the Calorease website:

If you do not use FBCx as a license to overeat, it can help you to achieve your weight management goals.

This is the major drawback to using Calorease.

After all if you know that your fat will not make you fat, it is easy to see how you may be lulled into a sense that a healthy diet does not matter any more. Not a good way to kick start a healthy new lifestyle and find new non fattening food habits.

So What Is Calorease and What Are The Ingredients For Calorease?

Calorease is a fat binding diet pill that will prevent some of the dietary fats that you eat from adding to your body as fat.

Each capsule contains 1g (1000mg) of FBCx:

  • FBCx is a polysaccharide called Alpha cyclodextrin: Soluble dietary fibre derived from grain.
    FBCx stands for Fat Binding Complexer and its weight loss benefits were discovered by;

two professors from the Department of Nutrition and Food Science and Department of Pathology, of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

Prior to their studies Alpha cyclodextrin was mainly used as an emulsifier in the food industry because of its binding qualities.

FBCx has undergone clinical testing. In one test carried for 2 months on 41 people it was found that

Supplementation of 6 g/day of FBCx, the primary ingredient in Calorease, without any diet or lifestyle changes, induced weight loss, reduced atherogenic lipoproteins, and increased insulin sensitivity in healthy overweight individuals.

So What Does All This Mean?

There is evidence that if you use FBCx regularly you may lose some weight and became less at risk from contracting diabetes. However, taking a pill is not as effective for health and weight loss as making dietary and life style changes. FBCx obviously does work in that it prevents some of the fat that you eat from adding to your body weight but is this really a healthy way to live?

We cannot help thinking that if you cut out some of these dietary fats first you would not need a diet pill to hide the evidence afterwards.

Does Calorease Have Any Side Effects?

According to product information, you should not experience too many side effects if you take the supplement as recommended. If you have not eaten sufficient fat to bind, it can cause flatulence and intestinal upset.

However many customers have reported problems.

The only side effect of this product I have experienced is the feeling of being bloated after taking. I thought this was supposed to help you LOSE weight!?!?!

Stomach pain seems to be an issue too;

I have been using this for almost two months and I have not lost one additional pound. It does not seem to work for me other than give me stomach pain.

Just got this a few days ago and have taken it 5 times. I now am having severe stomach pain. Did not really see any extra elimination from taking the pills.

One customer found the exact opposite when it comes to “elimination”, she reported;

…. if you can stand the “output” (bathroom) then this is a product for you

A couple of customers have complained about headaches and general aches and pains while taking this supplement.

However the FDA have designated Alpha cyclodextrin (FBCx) with a GRAS (generally regarded as safe) classification so any side effects are likely to be minimal.

Caution: Avoid if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Check with your doctor first if you have any sort of underlying health issue or are taking prescription medication in case of drug interactions.

Any Calorease Reviews From Customers?

Yes, and they are pretty well divided between negative and positive opinion.

Some customers have been pleased with this supplement:

I eat extremely healthy most of the time, but I love eating out …We all know that eating out means a lot of fat! In the past, I would notice my jeans get a little too tight and I would have to restrict for a week or so to compensate. But with Calorease, I can enjoy myself without the guilt. Now, eating out or splurging on a piece of cake doesn’t leave me guilt-ridden. Plus, I haven’t experienced any side effects. I love it!

My husband has Stage III Congestive Heart Failure. He began using this product in January and we went to the doctor yesterday. He had lost 25 lbs using this product in conjunction with his fluid pills

Not everyone is as pleased;

I have been using this for almost two months and I have not lost one additional pound.

One customer wondered if this supplement was right for her dietary habits

This product has been helpful in eliminating bulk due to the fiber content, but I have not seen the result that I read about. Maybe it is because I don’t eat that much fat?

So Does Calorease Work?

Calorease obviously does work for some people but we feel that this method of weight loss will not be suitable unless you eat a lot of dietary fat and cannot change your habits.

We feel that there will be a strong temptation to use FBCx as a license to overeat.

Watchdog Verdict

Calorease looks to be an OK diet supplement. It is safe and it has been clinically tested and found to work in the way as described. It will bind some of the dietary fats you eat and it will prevent them from being added to your body as fat.

The problem is that it all seems rather unnecessary and unless you already eat a lot of fat and are unable to stop yourself, we cannot see this pill having much of an effect.

The advertising states that you should not use this pill as a licence to over eat but it does seem inevitable that this will happen.

We have never seen such big meals described on a dieting website as healthy! Being told that you can eat AND not suffer the consequences is far too good to be true. There is something deeply disturbing about the concept of eating too much and then removing the consequences via the bathroom. We feel it would be more effective for weight loss to change your diet and restrict your fat consumption.

We quite like the idea of using Calorease in case of dieting emergencies such as holiday meals but feel that anything beyond that is just not worth it. In our opinion, this supplement is just not good enough for long-term use.
