Below we take an in-depth look at GutMeister Ultimate Prebiotic, to see whether this bacteriophage-based formula really works as intended.
GutMeister Ultimate Prebiotic is a supplement that is designed to improve overall gut health. It works by providing a source of bacteriophages, which are specially-selected viruses that work by killing off unhelpful gut bacteria and providing fuel for the healthy probiotic bacteria we need. This novel, patented approach is thought to be relatively free from the side effects we normally associate with prebiotics.
Bacteriophages are often used as prebiotics by customers and manufacturers, because they are not thought to cause side effects. Despite this, a few former customers have complained of issues such as diarrhoea in the Amazon customer reviews section.
GutMeister Ultimate Prebiotic is relatively cheap, costing just $20.97 per pack (30 servings) in every webstore where it is available to buy (such as Amazon and www.jet.com).
GutMeister Ultimate Prebiotic appears to be a useful option for customers looking to improve their gut health and digestive regularity. We have so far been impressed with 1000+ positive customer comments on Amazon, as the vast majority of former customers describe numerous benefits alongside a relative lack of side effects.
One thing to bear in mind is that this supplement works by introducing viruses into the system, and the manufacturer that owns the patent for PreforPro (GutMeister’s only ingredient) has so far failed to prove that their product works via a clinical trial. We have little doubt that this product works broadly as advertised (as the customer reviews should show), but the lack of scientific evidence should worry those of us concerned with safety or longer-term effects.
One other major concern we have is that this product appears to be most effective when paired with a second probiotic product – many of Amazon’s most positive reviews mention the fact that they used GutMeister alongside a second product in order for it to remain effective. This shouldn’t be a problem for customers aware of this fact beforehand, but the manufacturer’s fail to advertise or highlight the limited nature of prebiotics on their sales pages. They also do not provide a money-back guarantee or returns policy to protect customers who may have purchased in error, which is a major drawback for us.
Overall, we think that this product is a great option for those who are already using a probiotic supplement, and may be thinking about intensifying the positive effects they are already experiencing. However, any recommendation would come with too many caveats for us to put it on our all-star recommended list.
We do not recommend GutMeister Ultimate Prebiotic to our readers.

GutMeister Ultimate Prebiotic is a supplement that aims to boost the effects of other probiotic supplements. It is intended to provide a kind of “fuel” to speed the growth of “friendly” probiotic bacteria in the gut, which should then improve overall gut and immune system health. GutMeister Ultimate Prebiotic is advertised as non-GMO.
This prebiotic formula is produced and sold by Dr Tobias, a manufacturer of health supplements like omega-3 fish oil, colon cleansers, multivitamins and others. The company is named after its founder and figurehead Dr Tobias Ihde, a German academic and businessman. Despite what you may assume, Dr Tobias’ doctorate is in economics, and his work background is actually in management consultancy. The company can be contacted via the contact form provided on the official website’s “Contact Us” page, or through the company’s various social media pages.
The directions for use are as follows:
1 capsule taken daily, preferably with a meal or as directed by a healthcare professional.
On the official Dr Tobias website, GutMeister Ultimate Prebiotic is said to support the body’s “floral balance”. Unlike other prebiotic supplements, this product is said to work well on its own, effectively boosting the body’s levels of probiotic bacteria without further supplementation. The novel form of prebiotic used in this formula is also said to work within hours and avoids the “disadvantages that standard prebiotics have, like FOS etc”, although it is not clear what the manufacturer is referring to in this instance!
Unlike many of the other prebiotic/probiotic supplements we’ve seen over the years, the manufacturers of this product do not describe any of the actual health benefits of using this product (such as improved gut health etc.)
The science behind using bacteriophages as prebiotics is still in its infancy, but most early indications are promising. In general, researchers believe that these useful viruses can be programmed to effectively kill bad bacteria and provide fuel for good bacteria, all whilst not causing unwanted side effects such as gas and bloating.
However, it is not known whether this particular proprietary formula (PreforPro) is as good as the manufacturer claims. The ingredient has been patented and the manufacturers promise that a clinical trial is on the way in 2018, but as of writing there is no evidence to look at. As such, it is hard to know if this product works as it claims to – after all, finding viruses that kill the bacteria we don’t like and sparing the ones we want is no easy feat!
One final thing worth mentioning is that the customer reviews we could find discussing this product were almost universally positive, with more than 90% of current and former customers reporting experiencing benefits. On balance, and despite the lack of research evidence, we would imagine that this product probably works broadly as advertised.
The sole ingredient used in GutMeister Ultimate Prebiotic is listed below. The ingredient quantity listed is correct for 1 capsule.
As bacteriophages do not ferment in the gut, they are thought to not cause the gas and bloating we normally associate with probiotic and prebiotic formulas. However, it must be said that this set of ingredients is not particularly well-understood, and may still cause unexpected issues in some people (we spotted one or two customer reviews complaining of diarrhoea and other minor issues).
Do not exceed recommended dose. Pregnant or nursing mothers, children under 18, and individuals with a known medical condition should consult a physician before using this or any dietary supplement. This product is manufactured and packaged in a facility which may also process milk, soy, wheat, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and crustacean shellfish.
GutMeister Ultimate Prebiotic is a well-liked product, and more than 90% of the 1340 customer reviews we’ve seen on Amazon are positive. Praise is often directed to the product’s clear benefits and relative lack of side effects. One thing to note is that a huge proportion of customers use this product alongside a second probiotic product – it is not clear whether GutMeister is as effective without a second probiotic product to support it.
Having had digestive issues for 40 + years and then taking these prebiotics along with probiotics and having a normal functioning digestive system what can I say? Thank you Dr. Tobias, you have cured what five MD’s have failed to cure.
So far I have to say this stuff works. I feel much better, less headaches etc.. Just feel better overall. I’m taking this with a probiotic, and multivitamins, but this is the only new add to my regimen which leads me to believe that this is the reason for the improvements, and not the combination of all the other things I take. I’ll be buying this again when it runs out.
This is my first Dr. Tobias product and the first time I am using a prebiotic. I am on my second bottle and I have ordered a third. I find that I get best results when I take 1 capsule twice daily. I take each capsule along with a Lactobacillus Acidophilus Probiotic capsule during a meal. I used to suffer a lot from abdominal bloating discomfort for over 40 years but this product is doing so well I am finding it hard to believe. I am “holding my breath” because I once used a probiotic that produced almost as good results up to the 2nd bottle, then it lost its effectiveness. I am so hoping that my experience with this product will be different.
I understand the science behind Prebiotics, but honestly I do not feel any measurable difference after taking them. That doesn’t mean they aren’t working for good for me, I just can’t say they make me feel any differently.
Despite advertising the fact that customers’ satisfaction is “100% Guaranteed”, we found no mention of any kind of money-back guarantee or returns policy anywhere else on the Dr Tobias website. We always recommend that customers opt for a manufacturer that offers a full refund on all purchases when customers remain dissatisfied (whether the pack has been opened or not).
GutMeister Ultimate Prebiotic is available to buy from Amazon, www.jet.com, eBay, and a handful of other online stores. It normally retails for $20.97 per pack, although deals may be available on bulk/subscription purchases.
