Hyleys seems a reputable tea company. It is one of the major tea exporters in Sri Lanka and it operates in several countries, all over the world. Scroll down to read our thoughts on their Slim Tea.
Hyleys seem to offer good quality teas but their Slim Tea is not really different from the numerous “teatox” already available on the market.
We are concerned by the presence of senna leaves, a powerful laxative. The FDA advice is to use senna for less than seven days at a time and only occasionally; Hyleys urge you to drink their Slim Tea on a daily basis, which could cause severe side effects – including dependence to laxatives and interference with the contraceptive pill. Laxatives are not an effective weight-loss method and could be more damaging than helpful.
The side effects are mainly caused by the senna leaves and include abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhoea, dehydration, and laxative dependence.
If you are in the United States, Hyleys Slim Tea is very reasonably priced at $5.99 for a box of 25 tea bags. British customers are not so lucky; the same box of 25 tea bags is available on Amazon UK and costs a hefty £51.99.
We have concerns about Hyleys Slim Tea. Although the company seems to offer good quality teas, the presence of senna in this one is worrying.
Laxatives are not an effective method to lose weight and long-term use can cause serious health issues – dependence to laxatives amongst others. Hyleys Slim Tea received a few good reviews and people seem to particularly like the fruity flavours but don’t be fooled, this Slim Tea is not without danger and it will not help you lose weight.

Hyleys Slim Tea claims to help boost metabolism, burn fat and promote a healthy digestion. The tea is offered in various flavours such as goji berry, raspberry and pomegranate but the key ingredients are green tea leaves and senna leaves.
According to the advertising, these two ingredients will provide effective support for weight loss. In the case of green tea, there is some scientific evidence that it can slightly increase the metabolic rate, making weight loss easier. Drinking green tea regularly can also boost immunity and help protect against cell damage because of its high content in antioxidant.
Brew one tea bag in hot water for 5 to 8 minutes before drinking; best if used just before bed.
Senna leaves are not so beneficial. Senna is a plant that grows in Asia and is often used in over-the-counter medications to provide constipation relief. The FDA actually approves of senna for this short-term usage but no more. Many healthcare professionals have come forward, urging the supplement industry to ban senna from its diet products because of the risks.
Hyleys is a Sri Lankan company established in 1995. It produces ‘normal’ teas as well as a range of speciality tea supposed to help with ageing, cardiac health and sleep issues. Despite dipping its toes in the world of diet products, Hyleys is definitely a tea company rather than a health supplement specialist.
Hyleys Slim Tea promises to:
It is described as a “stimulating base of premium green tea and senna leaves that boost your metabolism and promotes a healthy digestion with a flavourful fruity flavour.”
This Slim Tea, like many other detox teas, is actually a laxative; and not a “gentle” one as the product information claims. Senna leaves are very harsh on the intestines and can cause severe side effects, especially with a long-term use. Many health experts would like to see them banned from diet teas and supplements.
Hyleys Slim Tea works very well as a laxative but is not effective for weight loss. You may initially lose a few pounds of water weight due the dehydration caused by the harsh sennosides, but there will not be any fat loss. Furthermore, a prolonged use will cause potentially dangerous side effects. For these reasons, we cannot recommend Hyleys Slim Tea.

Many customers have complained of side effects such as:
Not suitable for individuals under 18.
Avoid if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Senna leaf may interfere with medication including the contraceptive pill so it is recommended to use extra protection.
There are a lot of customer reviews for Hyleys Slim Tea and as ever, there is a wide range of opinion:
Use this tea to detox every now and again. It does a great job of that! And it tastes great. It really does help with the weight loss process!
This product works like a laxative on me.
When I take it, I feel very tired and sleepy. It also gives me cramps and I go to the bathroom at least 3 times before the cramping stops. I take it at night and have a rude awakening in the morning.
It gave me a whole lot of digestive issues.
Although I have not noticed a weight change, I do like this tea. I think it tastes and smells fantastic! I drink it before bed and it helps me have a bowel movement immediately after I wake up. It somewhat makes my stomach upset, but it’s worth it to have regular BMs.
Still waiting to see the effects of this tea. Directions say to drink 1 cup before bed. However, I feel indifferent. I am not using the restroom more. I have gained 2lbs since drinking this tea. Even with exercise.
The goji flavour is delicious; I don’t even have to add sugar.
Taste natural and delicious.
