Have you tried that crazy wrap thing? We are talking about It Works! – a US company that markets the novel idea of wrapping yourself in what is described as the Ultimate Body Applicator in order to redefine your body shape, improve your skin, and make you look thinner.
Lots of people have tried it and many have signed up to this MLM company as “wrapeneurs” in order to run their own home based business. It sounds fun but is any of it any good for your health or your pocket? Let’s take a look at It Works! to find out more.
It Works! is a multi-level marketing (MLM) company that specialises in beauty, fitness and weight loss products. The key product is a body wrap but the company also market a wide range of supplements and skin products, with the emphasis on natural ingredients, a healthy green lifestyle and what looks like having fun along the way.
The It Works! flagship product is a body wrap called the Ultimate Body Applicator. The advertising likes to describe this as “that crazy wrap thing” and it is the product that sets It Works! apart from other MLMs. The wraps are the reason that the It Works! distributors are sometimes referred to as “wrapeneurs.”
The Ultimate Body Applicator is a body wrap that comes pre loaded with a herbal cream and which you wrap tightly around your torso. According to the advertising, wrapping your body in this way will result in an improved body shape, i.e. it will smooth out cellulite and make you look slimmer. You are urged to take a photo of your body before you start so that you can compare it with your new improved shape after wrapping. Many of these before and after pictures are posted online and results do look impressive.
The body wrap cream contains herbs and botanicals such as Rosemary oil, Green tea and Seaweed extract so it all sounds attractive and healthy and according to the advertising the key features are:
Other It Works! products include a weight loss supplement called Ultimate Thermofit. We covered this fat burner in a previous review:
You can also buy general health supplements in the Greens range. There are skin products such as toners exfoliators and cleansers. There are specialised products such as Estro Rhythm – a supplement to ease the symptoms of the menopause.
The product packaging is attractive, although there is very little information about what these supplements actually contain and if there is any medical proof that they will work in the way as described. We will look into this later in the investigation.
It Works! is a multi-level marketing company, which means that the products are sold via a network of distributors rather than on sale in the shops. Becoming a distributor is touted as a great business opportunity and customers are urged to take this step themselves and join the party as the sales pitch puts it.
We have covered MLM businesses in a previous investigation:
The It Works website features a video of a woman who quit her job and now spends her life having fun and getting rich selling It Works! products.
It looks enjoyable – there are lots of pictures of distributors having fun on the website, and after all we all want to live the dream, but we are concerned that in reality it will probably not be as great or as easy as it sounds.
You are encouraged to buy the Business Builders kit for $99.00 kit to start. This comprises of 4 body wraps, promotional samples of other products and more importantly a replicated website from which you can run your business and sell to customers. This is free for the first 30 days, after which you have to pay a charge.
You need to agree to accept a regular auto ship delivery of 80 BV (bonus volume) each month. All It Works! supplements have a code and this relates to a quantity of products. In addition, to qualify for free products which you can then sell on, you have to sign up 4 people as loyal customers. i.e. enrol them into auto ship programs where they pay for regular products to be delivered to them each month.
To help you there is a 40-page list of terms and conditions, and after looking through these in some detail we found our heads spinning from all the jargon and the explanations of executives, rubies, diamonds and emeralds – as the higher echelons of this company are called.
Buried away at the bottom of the website, next to the terms and conditions and small print, there is a link to an income disclosure statement for 2015.
In 2015, 82% of all It Works! distributors remained at the first rung.
Only 1.28% people make it to Diamond levels and only 7.80% get the next step up the ladder to executive level. With this in mind, it seems pointless that It Works! spends so much time in describing the higher level bonuses when only a tiny fraction achieve this aim, but we guess they do this because it gives people something to aspire to.
In fact, the average monthly income for active distributors was $189.00. This figure only applies to money earned via a downline and does not account for sales profits or the costs of buying in stock. In addition, It Works! points out that you cannot count this figure as profit because expenses incurred by a distributor in operation or promotion of his or her business are not considered. As they point out,
expenses could be several hundreds or even thousands of dollars annually.
You are warned to factor in expenses such as advertising costs, promotional events product samples, training, travel, telephone, internet and everything else.
$2268 – this is the average income per year, which sounds OK, but BEFORE any expenses you may incur… is it really enough income to enable you to jack in your job as the website suggests?
Remember, this product relies on getting out there and demonstrating the wraps. Party planning and hosting a wrap event will cost you money in publicity or at least in snacks and drinks if you sell to friends.
One of the easiest ways to make money from It Works! is obviously going to be signing up people as fellow distributors because you will not have to give away samples or demonstrate the wraps. Of course when you catch onto this fact and focus your attention on establishing your downline rather than sales, you have crossed the dark side into pyramid selling.
Body wraps have been around for years as a pampering spa treatment and they are pleasant to do, but as anyone who has ever tried them knows, the effects do not last long.
We had never heard of any long lasting cures for cellulite or excess abdominal fat being achieved by body wraps. We have never heard of people permanently losing weight via this method as claimed by It Works!
According to Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, a Washington, D.C., dermatologist speaking in an interview with WebMD,
There’s never been any real scientific evidence that body wraps pull out toxins or purify your body in any way.
Sandra Fryhofer, MD, past president of the American College of Physicians is equally dismissive of the claims that any Body Wrap will help you lose weight,
Any loss of inches is going to be temporary. Wraps cannot take the place of a healthy diet and exercise.
However, all agree that after the wrap is removed the skin will appear tighter although this is only a temporary effect of a couple of days duration. You will look good for a while. And of course It Works! is very keen for you to take the before and after pictures to prove it.
It Works! wraps, aka the Ultimate Body Applicator, are expensive and because they are sold by individual distributors the prices vary depending on whom you buy from and what type of deal you are offered.
However, you are looking at on average around $69.00 as a general retail price. Remember this is just for a one off treatment that will only last for a couple of days at most.
In our opinion you would have a less expensive and more enjoyable time by visiting a spa and having a body wrap carried out professionally. We have seen body wrap spa treatments on sale for as little as $49.00 and that way you would get to enjoy the experience of a pampering experience in luxurious surroundings.
In addition, there are numerous It Works! body wraps on sale via Amazon for much less cost, and much to the irritation and anger of company distributors who make comments along the lines of,
It Works Global, the company that created and markets the Ultimate Body Applicator, SPECIFICALLY PROHIBITS distributors from selling their products on Amazon, EBay, Craigslist as well as other places such as these.
We have seen It Works wraps on sale for as little as $54.00 for a pack of four wraps. Feedback is reasonably good with many people noticing a temporary improvement.
This customer feedback amused us,
needed to drop an inch and a half off my waist in three weeks. I used these body wraps and it worked. Passed my USAF PT test for my waist measurement!! Def recommend and will buy this again if needed!!!
There are also numerous other brands on the market which are available for much less cost.
It Works! is a company with numerous distributors competing for sales across the USA. In our opinion, most people will struggle with earning any real money in view of so much competition and we believe this company walks a fine line between an MLM and a pyramid scheme.
There are surely only a limited amount of wrap events most people can host in the same area until people start making excuses and crossing the street to escape? Signing new people up as sellers in an already saturated market may help you fulfil your distributorship quota but it is not going to help your sales.
If It Works! was not a pyramid scam, distributors would not be actively recruiting an unlimited number of competitors in this way.
When it comes to the all important products for sale, in our opinion the wraps are really nothing special. They look like a fun gimmick that will make you look a little slimmer until the effects wear off but they come with zero scientific evidence that they will have any lasting effect. Health experts agree that effects will be temporary and should be viewed in the same way as a spray tan. Nice before a special event but not something that most of us need on a daily basis.
There is very little explanation about the Wraps or any of the supplements provided by the official website, yet there are pages and pages of information about bonuses, earnings and how you are going to get rich by selling this stuff. This focus shows exactly what is important to It Works! It is, as the song goes, “all about the money, money” and although we all know the importance of profit, this attitude does not make us think that the same amount of care has gone into creating the products as it has in devising the business plan.
In our opinion, It Works! is not a viable business opportunity for most people and although the distributors are passionate about their products, it just seems like a waste of time and effort to those of us who remain outside this MLM bubble.
