  • A British company

Matrix Night Shredder is a supplement that you take before bedtime. It is supposed to help you shred fat and according to the advertising, will promote a good night’s sleep.

Sleep is important for health and successful weight loss but with the increasingly busy lives that most of us lead, this fact is often overlooked. Studies have shown that a lack of sleep leads to snacking the next day and can disrupt your metabolism and the hormones that affect the appetite.

That said, the ingredients in Matrix Night Shredder are not known for promoting sleep. Instead, the supplement focuses mainly on the fat burning aspect without stimulants.

Matrix Night Shredder contains two proprietary blends; the Nocturnal Fat Complex and the Rest and Recoup Matrix.

The Nocturnal Fat Complex contains Irvingia Gabonensis also called African mango seeds, an ingredient that comes with clinical evidence that it can cause feelings of satiety and decrease fat around the stomach. It also contains amino acid L Carnitine and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) – natural chemicals found in Linoleic acid that is believed to reduce fat. The final ingredient is Raspberry Ketones, believed to increase the speed of the metabolism.

The Rest and Recoup Matrix contains magnesium, an abundant mineral in the body which is present in many foodstuffs, plus Theanine an amino acid that is sometimes taken in supplement form for anxiety and 5HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) a natural chemical that may help increase serotonin levels.

Matrix Night Shredder comes from British supplements company Matrix Nutrition. The company manufacture and market a range of supplements for weight loss, bodybuilding, and athletic performance.

According to the company information, Matrix Nutrition was established in 2007 and have a mission to supply reasonably priced supplements across the UK.

Matrix Nutrition has a lively social media presence via Twitter and Facebook and regularly run discounts and special offers on supplements

How to Take Matrix Night Shredder

To take Matrix Night Shredder:

  • Consume two (2) tablets daily, 30-45 minutes before intended sleep

Matrix Night Shredder Concerns

  • This supplement could keep you awake, which is not very good for a sleep aid!
  • Matrix Nutrition should have provided a health warning in a prominent position on the website
  • Feedback comments from customers seem very indifferent

What does Matrix Night Shredder claim to do?

According to the product advertising:

Night Shredder is a carefully developed weight loss supplement engineered not only to shred fat whilst you sleep, but also facilitate deep rest and recuperation.

And:

Will not only help you achieve your weight loss goals but it will also support a more restful night’s sleep. A good night’s sleep is vital to help resynchronise cortisol levels, allowing your body to fully rest and recover.

The advertising comes with a brief explanation of the ingredients and how they work but do not provide any evidence or links to clinical testing.

However, Matrix Night Shredder does come with quality assurance so looks pretty safe. The product information states,

When using Matrix Nutrition supplements you can have 100% confidence in the quality of both our products and suppliers. Each product undergoes multiple-rounds of testing before it reaches our customers, ensuring quality and consistency is constantly at the forefront of everything we do.

Does Matrix Night Shredder work?

Customer feedback is not too bad but there is very little of it. What there is, is fairly indifferent so it seems that Matrix Night Shredder may not be as good as the advertising claims

One of the principle ingredients of Matrix Night Shredder is Conjugated Linoleic Acid and although this is often touted for fat burning, it lacks any conclusive proof that it will have this effect.

Human studies of CLA have used much higher serving sizes than contained in this supplement. Supplementation tends to be in the range of 3,200-6,400mg daily, taken with meals and even then, results have been conflicting.

We cannot see this ingredient doing very much for fat burning. The other ingredients in the formula are equally unproven and in unknown quantities.

Matrix Night Shredder Ingredients

Matrix Night Shredder is a stimulant free fat burner and sleep aid. Serving size is equal to 2 capsules. Ingredient quantities here are provided by serving size.

Individual ingredient quantities are known because the formula is composed of the proprietary blends.

Nocturnal Fat Attack Complex (600mg):

  • Raspberry Ketone: This ingredient is believed to increase the speed of the metabolism and animal testing suggest that it may affect a protein hormone in the body called adiponectin, which is involved in breaking down fatty acids and regulating sugar levels. However, raspberry ketones have not undergone human clinical testing so there is no real proof that this ingredient will have any effect upon human metabolism and weight loss. In addition, raspberry ketones are similar in chemical structure to the stimulant synephrine so it is possible this ingredient may cause some of the same effects such as jitteriness, anxiety and rapid heartbeat. Overall, this ingredient seems an odd choice for a sleep supplement.
    Source:http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/raspberry
  • L-Carnitine: Your body makes this substance in the kidneys and liver and stores it in the muscles, heart and brain. It is also present in foods such as meat, especially offal and taken as a supplement for a variety of purposes including muscle development and exercise performance. However, there is no real evidence it is effective for these purposes although it may help improve elderly memory loss and depression
    Source:http://umm.edu/health/carnitine-lcarnitine
  • Irvingia Gabonensis: Also known as African mango seeds, this natural seed extract may help promote leptin- the hormone that signals feelings of satiety. Irvingia Gabonensis has undergone human clinical testing that displayed very positive results.
    Source:http://europepmc.org/abstract/MED/19254366
  • CLA: Conjugated Linoleic Acid is a group of compounds of unsaturated omega 6. It is found in dairy products, meat and eggs and other everyday foodstuffs. Most people get sufficient CLA in their daily diet however, some people take CLA supplements for fat burning. One experiment carried out on athletes over 12 weeks found that body fat was reduced but not weight. However, there are some health concerns about taking CLA as a supplement and research is not conclusive. Some evidence suggests it may improve insulin sensitivity. Other research suggests the complete opposite.

Rest & Recoup Matrix (400mg):

  • Magnesium: You need magnesium for energy, normal heart rhythm, muscle contraction and many of the body’s daily functions. Magnesium is the body’s most abundant mineral and is easily obtainable from a normal healthy diet. However, alcohol, medical conditions and medication can contribute to low magnesium levels, causing fatigue, nausea and other associated symptoms.
    Source:http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Magnesium-HealthProfessional/
  • Theanine: Amino acid found in plant species most notably tea. It may help increase brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine so is sometimes taken for its nootropic effect. Some people take theanine supplements to treat anxiety and depression. However, it does require further evidence, as most clinical investigation into this has been carried out on animals.
  • 5-HTP: 5-Hydroxytryptophan is a by-product of amino acid tryptophan found in foods such as turkey meat and Brazil nuts and is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin is a brain chemical that affects mood, appetite, and sexual behaviour. When levels are low, it can lead to depression, comfort eating and low mood. This natural chemical is also produced synthetically and some trials have found that doses of 50-3000 mg daily for 2-4 weeks can improve symptoms of depression. Amounts contained in this supplement are unknown.

So What Does All This Mean?

Matrix Night Shredder looks to be a safe supplement for most people. However, there does not seem to be much here to promote a good night’s sleep.

Raspberry ketones may have a stimulant effect for some people so may destroy the whole point of taking it. The nootropic ingredients may improve mood but is this necessary before bedtime? Surely, it would be better to take these in the morning with the day ahead of you?

Likewise, the weight loss ingredients may offer some support but again is this necessary before you sleep? Irvingia Gabonensis may help cause feelings of satiety due to its fibre content but unless you have to get up in the middle of the night to snack, it seems unlikely to have much effect.

Matrix Night Shredder Side Effects

Matrix Night Shredder looks safe but as with all supplements, there may be potential side effects to all of these ingredients. These may include:

  • Shakiness
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Stomach pains
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
Caution: Not suitable for individuals under 18. Avoid if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor first if you are taking prescription medication because of the risk of interactions. Take medical advice if you have an underlying medical condition. Matrix Nutrition does not provide any health information about Matrix Night Shredder. There is just a general purpose disclaimer hidden away in the small print of the website. This reads: …supplements can have a powerful physiological effect and they are designed to be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise programme. They should be used responsibly, following the manufacturer’s directions and dosages. Supplements can be harmful to some pre-existing medical conditions. You are strongly advised to consult with your general practitioner before taking any supplements and before embarking on any major dietary changes.

Matrix Night Shredder Customer Feedback

There are some customer reviews posted on the Matrix Nutrition website. Many customers have just written along the lines of:

Too early to see results, so it is not very helpful.

A couple of customers have been pleased. One customer reported:

Seeing good results with this. I will get a six pack!

Some of the feedback seems undecided.

I want to say this is great but I am not sure it is having any effect at all. I am on a good diet and just looking for a small helping hand. No doubt I need more than a week.

We like that Matrix Nutrition have responded to feedback comments and have chosen to display less than positive feedback.

There are just two independent reviews on the Amazon website:

I bought these pills for my wife. Since, she lost 2 kgs and seems happy in morning. Recommend to anybody.

The other customer reported:

To be honest didn’t see any difference and it stopped me from sleeping properly

Watchdog Verdict

We are not very impressed with Matrix Night Shredder. We cannot see why this supplement should help you get a good night’s sleep or even why you should take it at night. The fat burning claims are equally uncertain and some of the ingredients seem to be in too inadequate quantities to be effective.

The principle fat burning ingredients – raspberry ketones and CLA are unproven to work and in addition, raspberry ketone may actually keep you awake at night – not good news for a supplement described as a sleep aid.

There is evidence that 350mg of African mango seed extract may promote feelings of satiety but is this necessary while you sleep and are there sufficient quantities in each serving? We don’t know the quantities per serving and feel that this ingredient would be better taken in the day to prevent snacking.

The so-called nootropic ingredients have the same problem. Theanine and 5HTP may improve serotonin levels, so why not take them throughout the day?

In fact, apart from the name, there is no reason why you cannot take Matrix Night Shredder in the day. This supplement will not send you to sleep and if you are looking for a natural sleep aid, we suggest you try herbal tea such as chamomile or Valerian.

We like that Matrix Night Shredder looks pretty safe. The price is very reasonable and Matrix Nutrition looks to be a reputable British company. We like the fact that the supplements are made in the UK and that there are no associated payment issues or scams with the company.

However, we are less keen on this supplement. We don’t think it will work very well and for that reason, we cannot add Matrix Night Shredder to our approved list.

1 comment on 'Matrix Night Shredder'

  1. Hi, I ordered the 240 tablets size tub of the Matrix night shredder and lost 2LB in the first week, then that was it, no more. I had a great nights sleep, but I never lost an ounce of weight after the first week. For me, it was a waste of money as far as weight loss is concerned. I was hoping to get back to my former self, 28 inch waist, 8% body fat, but due to arthritus meds, I put on 10KG and 9 inches on my waist in two years. At the time I was doing bodybuilding 4 times a week, martial arts 3 times a week, so you can imagine how it made me feel. Hope this helps.
