This product has been devised by international best selling author and Martial Arts specialist Mike Dolce and is aimed at the body builder or athlete looking to build muscle.
According to the product information, you should not use Onnit The Dolce Whey for weight loss but despite the warning, protein powders are becoming mainstream for general weight loss so we have a feeling that this advice may fall on deaf ears!
We take a look at Onnit The Dolce Whey to find out more about this supplement.
Onnit The Dolce Whey is a protein supplement that contains just one ingredient; whey protein isolate. It is in powder form that you just add to water or juice in order to make a protein Shake in natural banana almond flavour. Alternatively, there are recipes on the product page with ideas on making the powder into Smoothies or Ice Cream.
Whey protein isolate is a by-product of cheese production and is derived from milk – remember the nursery rhyme and little Miss Moffat eating her curds and whey. It is the same stuff!
Whey is high in leucine an essential amino acid, which breaks down fat and it seems to help recovery after sports and endurance training so is often used by athletes.
However, these days whey protein is becoming popular with people just looking to lose weight.
Whey protein contains BCCA amino acids and may causes feelings of satiety. It encourages the release of hormones, such as leptin, which control hunger and decreases release of the hormones such as ghrelin, which signal hunger.
Although this all sounds good, there are pitfalls to taking whey protein isolate for simple weight loss. Meal replacements don’t suit everyone and if you continue to snack on top of a whey protein supplement, you will put on weight because this type of supplement contains a lot of calories and fats.
In addition, there is a warning against taking this supplement for weight loss. We fail to understand why this should be, when so many people are turning to very similar supplements in order to lose weight. One of these protein supplements marketed for weight loss is the “beach body ready” Protein World range.
Protein World is marketed exclusively for weight loss and protein supplements are a current trend in the supplements world.
The Dolce Whey is manufactured by American company Onnit – a supplements company and manufacturer based in Austin Texas.
Onnit are a reputable company dealing in health supplements with a slant on bodybuilding and athletic performance. They also sell products such as organic toiletries and apparel and have lots of fairly well known sports people and athletes as ambassadors.
Mike Dolce – the inspiration/originator of The Dolce Whey is one of these ambassadors. He is the international best-selling author of Living Lean, Living Lean Cookbook, and 3 Weeks to Shredded and is well known in the US Mixed Martial Arts scene.
He was voted MMA trainer of the year twice and many body builders will be impressed by his physical look although to be honest he does not look like a great role model if you just want to shed a few pounds of fat!
As a dietary supplement mix one scoop of The Dolce Whey with at least 8oz of water or your choice of juice.
Alternatively see the menu suggestions on the website and use the powder to make a smoothie or ice cream topping.
There are some lovely pictures on the Onnit The Dolce Whey product page! The most noticeable one is a continuous short film showing a brown cow in a field eating grass.
According to the product information, the milk contained in the Whey Protein Isolate comes from grass fed cows, including the one pictured, who are raised in New Zealand.
We struggled with this concept. This supplement is made in Texas yet the whey protein isolate (or at least the milk) is imported half way across the world?
It seems crazy yet in the USA grazing cows have become a rarity, having been replaced by massive super dairies so maybe this is the reason?
The product advertising explains the benefits of the whey protein.
At the heart of The Dolce Whey protein is one of the most powerful protein sources on the planet – grass fed whey isolate.
Our whey isolate offers a complete amino acid profile with a high protein yield for maximum recovery.
According to the information, the Onnit manufacturing process is superior to others on the market.
The Dolce Whey isolate is manufactured by using state-of-the-art cold processing and cross-flow microfiltration technology, allowing for many essential nutrients and immune factors to remain intact, along with all those muscle-supporting amino acids.
Many other proteins use a less efficient, high heat process, destroying much of what protein should contain.
Onnit the Dolce Whey is a whey protein supplement that may suit you if you are looking to bulk up muscle. You may find it helps you lose fat if you use the supplement in a drink or shake to replace meals.
Serving size is equal to 29g scoop (provided):
Onnit The Dolce Whey looks much the same as every other protein supplement on the market. In general a protein supplement will make you feel fuller and less tempted to snack or eat junk food. The protein causes feelings of satiety and when it comes to building muscle, there is evidence that the branched chain amino acids will both build and maintain muscle mass.
However, this supplement is fairly fattening. It contains 110 calories per serving and if you add it to milk or juice in order to make a shake you will have to add approximately another 110 calories at least.
Unless you use this supplement in order to replace a meal, you could find you put on weight while using The Dolce Whey. In fairness, this supplement is aimed at the athlete or body builder looking to convert fat to muscle and not the casual dieter just looking to lose fat.
The Dolce Whey may cause some side effects including:
Onnit provides the following advice.
Not suitable for individuals under 18. Consult with a medical doctor before taking this or any nutritional supplement, if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, have or suspect a medical condition or are taking any medications.
NOTICE: Use this product as a food supplement. Do not use for weight reduction.
There are some customer reviews posted on the product website and there is a range of opinion.
Some customers are satisfied. Many like the additive free nature of the powder. Many protein powders are high in sugars and flavourings, which is not the case here.
This customer reported:
I despise artificial flavors and sweeteners so if I can find a protein powder that doesn’t interfere with the flavor of the fruit or almond butter or whatever I’m putting into my blender, that’s a win. If I can taste the protein, that means I’m eating something I don’t need or it’s covering up for something else. I’m a customer for life, Dolce.
Another customer was pleased by the absence of side effects:
I love this protein. I have zero issues with gastric distress or bloating, which in the past with other whey protein products I have had. I also find the taste delicious and subtle. The two recipes suggested also are amazing.
Not everyone is as satisfied. This customer said:
It is horrible, don’t spend your money on this protein powder.
Other customers have questioned the price:
No taste I’m sure it does the job just fine however plenty more options that are cheaper and taste much better.
Some customers have complained about the packaging:
The bag it comes in is terrible. When I pulled the tag to open it, the ziplock mechanism ripped the bag wide open, spilled some, now it resides in a plastic bag. Not that big of a deal but still slightly annoying. Would give 5 stars if the packaging was improved!
Nobody has mentioned results such as muscle building or weight loss.
Onnit The Dolce Whey may help you build muscle and train – the way it is supposed to. Many body builders swear by the use of this ingredient and we love that the whey protein used in this supplement seems to be good quality and derived from healthy sources and free range cows.
We also like that the supplement is not as high in fats and sugars as many other protein powders on the market are.
For weight loss, we are not so sure. The product information warns against using The Dolce Whey for weight loss and it seems wrong to go against their advice.
However, many people have successfully lost weight by replacing meals with protein shakes and there seems to be no reason why this product should be unsuitable for this purpose.
You will not be provided with any directions or health tips for weight loss. However, if you have decided to go down the Whey protein Isolate route and know what you are doing, we feel that Onnit The Dolce Whey may be a good choice.

We are quite impressed with Onnit the Dolce Whey. If you do want to try using a protein powder, this may be a good choice. It looks healthier than many others on the market and we love the money back guarantee. We like that the whey protein is derived from grass fed milk and the fact that the supplement is made in the USA by a reputable company.
However, this supplement is not really aimed at the weight loss market and the product information warns against using it for this reason. That said we cannot really see why this should be so, when there are so many protein powders touted specifically for weight loss and if you know what you are doing, it may be worth a try.
The downside to Onnit the Dolce whey is that it is rather expensive compared to others on the market and as with all protein powders it may make you put on weight rather than use it, if you do not replace meals.
If you were looking for a good quality Whey Protein Isolate supplement for bodybuilding, The Dolce Whey may be a good choice but in our opinion, this product is just too specialised for most people. Therefore, we have no other choice but to reject it.
