What You Need To Know About PhenQ

The principle ingredient, calcium carbonate comes with very little clinical evidence that it will work in the way as described and the other ingredients are in low quantities so are unlikely to work effectively. PhenQ seems to be mainly composed of various filler ingredients and we cannot see it doing much to help you lose weight. There are dangers with taking excessive calcium carbonate. It can cause vomiting and nausea and be a contributory cause to elevated calcium levels in the blood (hypocalcaemia).

What Are The Side Effects Of PhenQ?

PhenQ may cause side effects. These are mainly from the calcium carbonate content and may include constipation, nausea/vomiting, gas, mental confusion, headache, thirst, jitteriness, anxiety, and itchiness.

How Much Does PhenQ Cost?

1 x bottle of 60 capsules (1 month’s supply) costs £45.95.

Buy 2 x bottles and get one free (3 months supply) costs £91.90.

Buy 3 x bottles and get two free (5 month’s supply) for £129.95. This option comes with a free bottle of another supplement called Advana Cleanse.

Our Verdict On PhenQ

There are some good points about PhenQ. We like that this supplement comes with a money back guarantee, and we like that the company seem to be reputable. We approved an Ergo supplement previously so we are confident that you will not be entered into any dodgy billing scams with this one either.

However, we are not terribly impressed with PhenQ. This supplement is very expensive at just under £50.00 for a month’s supply and, in our opinion, it is just not worth it. Calcium carbonate is a very cheap ingredient and we just cannot see how this supplement justifies the price tag.

In addition, it is all a bit unproven. Although recent research is looking into calcium for weight loss, experts believe that increasing your daily intake of low fat calcium may be a better way to go rather than supplements. You would be less likely to experience side effects as well, which can be an issue with calcium carbonate.

Overall, our opinion is that PhenQ just does not look good enough to add to our approved list so we have no other option but to reject it.

PhenQ Review

PhenQ is following a diet pill tradition by using “Phen” as part of the name and popping the words “In Phentermine Q” on the label. Although this phrase is pretty meaningless, it is in reference to Phentermine – a notorious but powerful prescription drug that has helped people lose weight but is known for side effects including a link to strokes and heart attacks. These days Phentermine is not so easily available and possibly for this reason, there are numerous weight loss supplements on the market such as PhenQ which pay homage to the Phentermine name.

A “Phen” diet pill usually contains a lot of stimulants. However, PhenQ does not follow this trend and in fact it is unlike any diet pill we have ever seen. The only stimulant ingredient is caffeine which contains around the equivalent of a cup and a half of coffee. The principle ingredient is Calcium Carbonate at a whopping 625mg a serving.

PhenQ Facts

  • Each bottle contains 60 capsules (30 daily servings)
  • Comes with free worldwide shipping
  • Manufactured by Ergo Health Group – a company based in Dubai

Calcium is essential for healthy bones and teeth but there is little to link it to weight loss and in fact calcium carbonate is often used as a filler ingredient in other supplements. Calcium carbonate is however taken as a cheap over the counter antacid treatment where it is effective if taken in moderation.

Calcium carbonate is an abundant mineral found across the world in rocks and cliffs and even identified on Mars. Closer to home calcium carbonate is present in hard natural substances such as pearls and eggshells and in dietary form is present in green leaf veggies such as kale and broccoli.

Other ingredients include amino acids which may help cause fat burning and muscle mass, and vitamins. There are also some small servings of weight loss ingredients such as capsaicin extract believed to work as a natural thermogenic (fat burner), a natural cactus extract called Nopal and a trademarked supplement called A Lacy Reset. This last one contains Alpha Lipoic acid and is supposed to protect against oxidative stress.

How to Take PhenQ

Take one PhenQ pill with your breakfast and one with your lunch every day for two months in order to achieve the desired result.
If you need to lose a lot of weight, it is recommended to take supplement for three months.
Do not exceed the recommended dosage.

PhenQ is manufactured by Ergo Group Ltd an investment group based in Dubai. The group invests in sectors including health, wellness, technology and energy. According to the product information, Phen Q is manufactured in FDA approved facilities but there is no further information as to whether PhenQ is made in the UK or the USA. It is highly likely it is manufactured in both.

Although PhenQ originates from a Dubai based company, there are offices both in the UK and USA which deal with shipping and customer services in both countries. The company also ship internationally and the product website is available in many different language versions.

PhenQ Concerns:

  • There can be side effects to taking calcium carbonate
  • Waste of money. This supplement is expensive and may do nothing for health and weight loss
  • Contains lots of filler ingredients. Many people consider calcium carbonate to be a filler ingredient too

We have covered an Ergo supplement in a previous review. This was Garcinia Cambogia Extra which we were impressed with.

Although we are not 100% convinced about garcinia cambogia as an ingredient, we thought this supplement looked like a good way of trying this popular although unproven ingredient. We added Garcinia Cambogia Extra to our approved list.

What Does PhenQ Claim To Do?

According to the advertising, there are six key features about PhenQ, features that will give you the “slim sexy body you’ve always wanted”:

  • Unique new slimming product designed to give you better results than others.
  • Burn stored fat and reveal your hidden dream body.
  • Suppress your appetite to eat less and cut calories.
  • Block fat production to stop weight gain.
  • Improve your mood and energy levels for hassle-free weight loss.
  • High quality formula produced in the US and UK in GMP and FDA approved facilities.

The claims explain the role of calcium by mentioning a clinical trial:

Obese adults taking part in a six month study lost more body weight and body fat when they supplemented their diets with higher calcium amounts

PhenQ makes losing weight straightforward, simple, and saves you spending on several products!

The supplement comes with a full 60 Day money back guarantee so:

you can purchase with absolute confidence. Simply return any unused PhenQ in its original packaging within 67 days of receiving your order and we’ll give you a full refund, excluding any shipping charges.

Does PhenQ Work?

We can’t see PhenQ doing much for weight loss. There is nothing in this supplement that you could not get from a normal balanced diet and there are concerns about taking calcium carbonate supplements long term.

That said there may be something in the claims that low fat calcium may help reduce body fat.

The research suggests that increased calcium stored in fat cells may help break this fat down and lead to fat burning. Testing on obese mice showed that on average had a 42% reduction of fat mass. Will this work on humans? It might. However the research is in preliminary stages and some scientists believe that a more effective method would be to substitute high fat dairy produce with low fat dairy produce and to ensure you are getting plenty of calcium from other dietary sources such as green leafy veg, fish nuts and oats.

Current calcium guidelines are for men to ingest 1200mg of calcium and women 1300mg of calcium per day.

What Are The Ingredients of PhenQ?

PhenQ is a multi purpose weight loss supplement. Serving size is equal to one capsule.

  • Calcium Carbonate (625mg): Calcium carbonate is a chemical compound formed by carbon, calcium and oxygen and is found in rocks around the world as well as on Mars! It is also taken in supplement form for calcium – essential for healthy bones and teeth. One clinical trial tested calcium carbonate for weight loss on 32 obese people and seemed to suggest that increasing dietary calcium contributed to weight loss.

  • Caffeine Anhydrous (150mg): Same as the caffeine in the coffee you drink but in powdered form making it more suitable for supplements. Can increase the metabolism and as a result lead to weight loss although effects can wear off as you get accustomed to use. Amount here equivalent to about one and a half cups of instant coffee.
  • L Carnitine Fumerate (142.5mg): Stable form of amino acid L Carnitine which is present in meat, nuts and some veggies and is important for muscle building and combating fatigue. L Carnitine is often taken by body builders for this reason.
  • A Lacy Reset (25mg): Speciality branded supplement comprising of alpha-lipoic acid and cysteine. It has been created to help regenerate and restart cells based on mitochondrial activation so the idea is that it works on a cellular level to improve health. It has been reported in clinical trials to increase wellbeing, reduce tiredness and help the recovery process.

  • Nopal (20mg): This cactus fruit extract is a source of the mineral manganese. Early research suggests it may affect blood sugar levels and may be effective for diabetes treatment.
    Source: http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/30/5/1264.extract
  • Magnesium Stearate (10 mg): chemical compound often used in production of pills and supplements because it prevents ingredients from sticking.
  • Capsicum extract (8mg): At high levels capsaicin, the compound in chilli peppers responsible for the fiery effect can be an effective thermogenic. Some evidence suggests that capsicum can increase body temperature and metabolism for 30 minutes after eating. However here in too small quantities to do much.
  • Sipernat: (5mg): Patented silica powder and filler ingredient. Used in supplements and medication as a carrier substance.
    Source: http://www.sipernat.com/product/sipernat/en/Pages/default.aspx
  • Niacin (4.5mg): Also known as vitamin B3, Niacin is important for general health. It may help reduce cholesterol levels and be effective as a treatment for diabetes. However in high amounts can cause side effects. Maximum daily intake is 35mg so here in safe levels.
    Source: http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/niacin
  • Piperine (3mg): natural chemical in black pepper and used in supplements to enhance bioavailability of the other ingredients.
  • Chromium Picolinate (80mcg): Natural trace mineral which means that your body requires very little, chromium plays a role in the regulating of blood sugar and insulin. It may help prevent sugar cravings and it is being investigated as a treatment for diabetes.

Are There Any Customer Reviews For PhenQ?

There is very little independent feedback for Phen Q despite the high number of customer testimonials on the product website. Unsurprisingly all these are extremely positive.

Here is a typical example from a customer, who has reported a loss of 7lbs:

I always hated having my picture taken – I used to try and hide behind other people in photos. I had to hold my stomach in all the time, and every time I sat down I’d have to cover it with my arms so people couldn’t see it. Now I don’t have anything to hide, and I love having my picture taken!

We could only find one Independent customer review and this was not as favourable. This lady had issues with the size of the capsules and the lack of effects. She reported:

Too big to swallow. Has not helped in weight loss at this time even though these are being taken with a healthy diet and exercise.

  1. Tracey says:

Total waste of money. Took for 1 month. No weight loss, no inch loss, chalky giant horse sized tablets that taste aweful and acidic in your mouth plus they are really expensive. I bought to help me curb my appitite but really didn’t help there either. I’m quite resilient to caffeine so was spared the side effects others have suffered.
No money back from company – guarantee worthless.

  2. Anna says:

Waste of money. Tried Phenq for 3 weeks and did not lose any weight. Stopped taking the product. The money back guarantee, of course, is only if you bought the product for at least 60 days. DO NOT BUY.

  3. donna stephens says:

  5. Scott Kennedy says:

I am a man, initially weighing in at 107.5 kgs and 6 ft tall. I have been taking PhenQ for nearly 2 weeks. I don’t exercise other than walking on a Construction Site and drink plenty of water. Breakfast is a protein shake and lunch is a big salad with Tuna or last nights leftovers, with fruit in between. Dinner is normal including a beer or 2 some nights or wine. I have lost 2 kgs in 2 weeks and am happy so far. I will continue posting. Last weighed in at 105.3 kgs

  6. Helen says:

I have been taking PhenQ for second day. A lot of side effects. I feel really dizzy, headaches, my blood pressure is so high. I took only 1 pill a day. Half for each time but it still makes me sick. I think Im gonna just go for normal low carb diet. These pills should not be sold at all. I hope I am gonna get refund cause I paid 120 USD.

  7. Julie says:

I have been taking PhenQ for nearly 2wks, not lost any weight yet and been on a striked diet. Tablets are big and taste discusting if not swallowed on first attempt. Not had any side affects and haven’t surpressed my appetite so I wouldn’t personally recommend waste of money ?

    1. Scott Kennedy says:

Julie, try eating whatever food for that particular meal, chew it up and before you swallow put the tablet in between. You are right, they taste awful. Keep trying, I’m on your side. Cheers

  8. Sharon Jacobson says:

I have been using this product for a month. No weight loss, extreme itchiness, mental confusion, headaches and heart palpitations. Very disappointing.

  9. Amy says:

I have been using this product for over a month and have experienced zero weight loss. I don’t think this product is worth the money

  10. Daniela says:

    No side effects
Did give me energy and curves my appetite
Almost finished my first bottle, and doing exercise and diet. NO weight loss yet
Don’t know If I will finish my other two bottles

  11. Elspeth says:

First week diet was strict and was on 1100 calories and exercise every night 2nd week no weight loss at all with phenq 3rd still no weight loss sorry but this has acted as a diuretic causing headaches and anxiety total waste of money.

  12. Elspeth says:

On have been taking phenq for a week now and have definitely lost my appetite. Weigh in this morning and lost 5lbs. Down side can’t sleep and awful headache.

  13. Paul says:

Very good review. Lots of helpful indicator values. One tiny mistake I noticed is that you mentioned elevated calcium level as hypocalcaemia, which actually means decreased calc level. Other than that very helpful.

  14. Pr says:

I have been taking it for 1 week and the first thing I noticed was my loss of appetite. I am a man and have never paid any attention to this diet stuff I always just thought eat sensible exercise lots . As I have gotten older work responsibilities and hours have increased and time to exercise has decreased. This product works so far I have lost 4 ponds and have more energy.

  15. Amanda says:

Thank you for posting this review on PhenQ. I’ve been using it for the past week and have experienced several of the side effects you mention. Nausea, constipation and anxiety being the most prevalent. I’m committed to my weight-loss and resolute to moving forward with the old-fashioned ways. Side note: this is my second week of being on a vegan diet and I’ve had the best weight-loss of my life and thought, PhenQ would assist me with this, but the side-effects are not worth it. I would caution anyone, who is interested in this product or any similar product for weight-loss. Best of luck!
