Pool Pharma is an Italian company based in Milan that distributes prescription drugs, proprietary drugs, and toiletries. They distribute these products through a couple of brands: Kilocal, which specialises in weight loss supplements, and MG.K, which concentrates on food supplements.
Below, we take a closer look at a company that at first glance seems to have a lot going for it, and a lot to offer its customers. But then again, things aren’t always what they seem.
Giorgio Pizzoni, creator and owner of Pool Pharma, was already a successful businessman. On behalf of pharmaceutical industries, his company DLF Distribuzione Lombarda Farmaci had been concentrating on the distribution of pharmaceutical products. Eventually, he decided to develop and distribute his own products and brands.
In the early 1990s he created Pool Pharma, and the two companies now operate side by side, DLF being one of POOL PHARMA’s selected concessionaires.
POOL PHARMA’s success is mainly based on its two core brands, MG.K VIS, which was introduced in 1997, and Kilocal, a brand created in 2001. While MG.K VIS represents a whole range of food supplements (such as MG.K VIS Ricarica Plus, an energy supplement intended for complete recovery), Kilocal products help to reduce weight.
“We introduced Kilocal in 2001, and it is still one of our bestsellers. This is quite unusual.” – Mr. Bianconcini, Marketing Manager of Pool Pharma.
Instead of resting on their laurels, Pool Pharma developed a vast range of different Kilocal products with different target groups, regularly launching innovative products, and in 2010 they started selling cosmetic treatments for the wellbeing of the skin called Estetil.
In Italy, over 3000 pharmacies sell their products and has the support of the Italian sport TV announcer Frederica Fontana. This impressive company has a turnover of 28.5 million euros and is currently starting to export their products to Russia and the Far East.
But unfortunately, not everything is so positive. Digging deeper into Pool Pharma, we have managed to find four different court orders against the brand Kilocal for getting their success by false claims. In 2002 the Antitrust condemned the slogan of “You only need one pill of Kilocal to defeat the fat”. Then in 2003, Antitrust condemned it again because of the description “The after meal tablet, with the ability to eliminate excess calories before they deposit and become fat” and finally in 2004 the judges of Autodisciplina Pubblicitaria judged that the slogan used “Don’t give up on the pleasures on the table, Kilocal taken after meals…reduces calories”, with this last one finally giving Pool Pharma a fine of 200.000 Euros for the deceptive supplement.
Knowing that Pool Pharma uses different false claims to sell their products, we will have a deeper look into Kilocal and the different supplements under this brand. However, before going into these specific supplements available, something struck us when we looked at the official website in the section of “I’ve lots so many kilos!..”, where we saw that all the pictures used are taken from other websites, for example: Brian 22 years old from America, who lost 5 kilos with Kilocal and a healthy diet. Unfortunately, this man is also a student in different universities around the globe. This is quite a common practice in different companies who promote weight loss supplements, but for a company who, as aforementioned, gains millions a year and their products are supposed to provide good results, we hoped to find real customers.
Kilocal currently has fourteen different supplements which are:
Concentrating on only a couple of the most popular ones, Kilocal Brucia Grassi and Kilocal Compresse, both are aimed at burning fat, eliminating calories and, even though they are popular, they are the ones that caused the Antitrust Court to rule against the brand.
Going through their official website, they provide a list of ingredients for each supplement – except when it comes to proprietary blends. Nevertheless, comparing Kilocal Brucia Grassi and Compresse we can see the reason why they promote “You only need one pill of Kilocal to defeat the fat”. Both supplements contain high levels of laxatives and diuretics, with ingredients such as senna, buckthorn, cassia, and tamarind. Quite worrying, seeing as the official website doesn’t warn the consumers on how long they can take these products.
The company Pool Pharma and the brand Kilocal gave us some hope knowing that they provide different supplements for different requirements. However, the deeper we look the worse it got with court cases against them, bad reviews, and their main ingredients in most weight loss products based on laxatives and diuretics.
They are a company who concentrates on getting the highest turnover without worrying about the consumers. And for us that is a big red neon sign that says “Do Not Touch”. We do not recommend trying this company.
