Also known as SoulCycle, Flywheel or Cyc Fitness, Spin classes involve 45 minutes of pure, intense cardio, endurance and strength building, all on a stationary bicycle. With classes for people of any level, it is easy to get into and enjoy with instructors putting on a playlist to get you in the mood to burn away the fat and build muscle.

    The Facts

Spinning classes can only be taught by those who are certified, to offer a safe an effective workout for those looking for it. You can control the pace of the workout, which makes it a great exercise for people of any age and level. It is perfect for those who have joint problems as it is low-impact, compared to certain exercises like running or High Intensity Interval Training which put a strain on certain areas, particularly the knees.

    What to Expect

You should know that what you do in the classes is completely down to you. The instructors are there to help and guide you to make sure you don’t harm yourself. They will show you the correct form and how to recover. Don’t feel pressured to keep up with everyone else, it isn’t a competition. Everyone has different targets in mind when it comes to fitness.

Always start off slow, don’t dive in straight away as you could damage your muscles. It isn’t easy and your muscles will ache for a while, but the more you do it the more you’ll get used to what you’re putting your body through.

What to wear and bring with you

If you’ve got some workout clothes handy that will be great, you’ll want breathable fabric because you’ll be sweating a lot! If you don’t have any it isn’t a problem, just stay away from clothes that are too long and baggy as they could get trapped in the pedals or wheel, and wear a good pair of trainers.

Always remember to bring a water bottle to keep yourself hydrated, as you don’t want to pass out from the heat. A towel will be extremely helpful in this situation to mop up all the sweat that you will pour out.

For those who are more experienced at working out can bring a heart monitor with you to make you more aware of how many calories you are burning during the time frame. It also works as motivation for you to try and better yourself each time you attend a class.

    Some useful tips

A good thing to always do is to get there early before all the bikes are taken and it gives you a chance to chat to the instructor to let them now you’re new to the class. Asking them to set up the bike for you will show you how to do it properly for future reference. It would be helpful to find a spot near the front so you can see the more experienced people.

Always stretch once you’ve finished the workout to avoid any injuries that could occur, you don’t want all that hard work to be for nothing.

It’s a good idea to try out a few classes as each instructor is different. You may find that one is too easy and one just pushes you too far. It’s a fun way to burn calories and make friends so ensure you find a class you want to stick with.

    Any cons?

If you are only doing spinning classes, and no other exercises they are likely to bulk up your thighs. Celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson said:

Spin may burn calories in the short term, but if that’s all you’re doing, it’ll bulk your thighs…I have women who come into my office after spinning exclusively for six months, wondering why they can’t fit into their jeans.

While they do burn a lot of calories, normally between 400-600 calories, a pound of fat is 3,500 calories. So to burn that amount every week, you would need to couple a few spin classes with other exercises.
