Zantrex 3

Unfortunately it is a common marketing tactic to exaggerate about the strength of a diet pill, using buzz words such as ‘super pill’ in the hopes that consumers will just believe the company and purchase the product, without looking too closely at the ingredients used, or researching the pill themselves. We aim to identify the truth of the claims made by diet pill manufacturers, to help our readers make an informed choice about which product to purchase.

Below we take an in-depth look at Zantrex 3, an energy boosting weight loss supplement that is described by the manufacturers as a ‘Super Pill’.

Zantrex 3 Pros

  • 30 day money back guarantee (from date of delivery!)

Zantrex 3 Cons

  • Long list of stimulant ingredients
  • Long list of potential side effects
  • Manufactured by company with history of clashes with FTC

What You Need To Know About Zantrex 3

Zantrex 3 comes in a blue bottle – whilst this may seem like an odd thing to point out, it is important, as the manufacturers of Zantrex 3 also make Zantrex 3 Fat Burner, which comes in a red bottle. Despite the very similar name they actually contain different ingredients. The two supplements should never be taken at the same time, as this could cause serious side effects. Zantrex 3 is a stimulant based supplement, which aims to work by increasing the metabolism and suppressing the consumer’s appetite. The product also contains some ingredients, such as Maca Root, that have traditionally been used as aphrodisiacs.

What Are The Side Effects Of Zantrex 3?

Zantrex 3 is a stimulant based diet pill with a long list of ingredients, and so there are numerous side effects that could develop whilst taking this supplement. Potential side effects include jitteriness, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, and increased urination. Because of the incredibly high levels of caffeine found in this supplement, consumers should avoid all other sources of caffeine whilst taking Zantrex 3!

How Much Does Zantrex 3 Cost?

Zantrex 3 can be purchased from Zantrex3.com, with a single bottle costing $29.99 plus delivery charges. iHerb also sell Zantrex 3, with a single bottle costing $27.99, plus delivery charges.

Each bottle contains 86 capsules. As the directions for use are open to interpretation, a bottle could last for as long as 86 days of use, or as little as 14 days of use. If the consumer is taking one capsule before each meal of the day, a single bottle will last for around 28 days of use, making an affordable option. If consumers need to take the maximum recommended daily dose of 6 capsules, then the long term cost of the supplement is much higher, and also needs to be repurchased fairly quickly.

Our Verdict On Zantrex 3

We are not impressed by Zantrex 3. The sales website makes some outrageous claims about the product’s potency, brazenly declaring these statements to be ‘fact’; however, the company fail to provide any clinical support for the claims that they make at all. They also compare Zantrex 3 to ephedra, which has been made illegal in numerous countries as it caused a huge number of serious side effects, and was deemed unsafe.

The amount of caffeine found in this product is unnecessarily high, with the manufacturers stating that there is around 300 mg of caffeine (and caffeine-like stimulants) in each two capsule serving. This high dose suggests that side effects are going to be common, and this is confirmed by the number of customer reviews that mentioned side effects.

The manufacturers do offer a strong money back guarantee, with the 30 day returns period starting from the date that the product is delivered to the consumer, not the date that it is ordered. The product does appear to be very affordable, if a low or relatively low dose is taken. Anyone who is taking four or more capsules per day, up to the maximum daily dose of 6 capsules, is going to find the product much more expensive in the long run. We do not recommend this higher dose in any case, because of the increasingly high risk of side effects developing.

Basic Research LLC, the company that owns and manufactures Zantrex 3, have a long history of making “Dramatic, unsubstantiated weight and fat loss claims” about their products, and getting into conflicts with the FTC and FDA over the way that they market their products. We do not trust the manufacturers of Zantrex 3 at all!

Overall, we do not recommend Zantrex 3 to our readers.

Zantrex 3 Review

Zantex 3 is a stimulant based weight loss supplement that aids weight loss by increasing the metabolism and by suppressing the consumer’s appetite.

Zantrex 3 Facts

  • Manufactured by Zoller Labs (who are owned by Basic Research LLC)
  • 86 capsules per bottle
  • Contains around 300 mg of caffeine per 2 capsule serving

There are numerous promotional websites for Zantrex 3 that are set up to look like blogs, including claiming that some celebrities, including Britney Spears, have used the product. The blogs claim that this story was printed on the front page of the Daily Express, but we were unable to find any evidence of this article on any credible website. When an article on MSNBC.com accused the manufacturers of making these blogs to advertise this, a spokesperson for the manufacturing company stated:

We have not created advertisements claiming such an affiliation with Ms. Spears and we have no plans to do so. The ‘ad’ referred to in the MSNBC.com story was not developed, distributed, or authorized by us. Zoller Labs has not mentioned Britney Spears in any advertising. Period!

How to Take Zantrex 3

For weight loss, take two capsules with a full glass of water 15 minutes before main meals.
For a significant energy boost: Take one or two capsules as needed.

Do not exceed six capsules in any 24-hour period.

Do not take Zantrex-3 High Energy Fat Burner (red bottle) and original Zantrex-3 (blue bottle) at the same time.

Zantrex 3 is manufactured by Zoller Labs. There is not much information available about Zoller Labs, other than that they are based in Salt Lake City, Utah. More specifically, they are based at the same exact address as Basic Research LLC, and appear to be owned by the company. We have previously investigated Basic Research LLC and our findings can be read here; they have had so many conflicts with the FDA and FTC over the years that we had to write a separate article about them! Essentially, over the years they have repeatedly marketed numerous products by making completely unsupported claims about the potency of the supplements. Needless to say, we do not trust Basic Research LLC, or Zoller Labs, because of their history of misleading consumers in order to make a profit.

Zantrex 3 Concerns:

  • Manufactured by a company with a poor reputation
  • Incredibly high caffeine content
  • Lots of reports of side effects

What Does Zantrex 3 Claim To Do?

The manufacturers of Zantrex 3 make the following claims about the potency of their weight loss and energy boosting supplement:

Zantrex-3… 546% more weight loss† than the leading ephedra-based diet pill… and that’s a fact. Here’s another fact: Zantrex-3 is way beyond ephedrine, way beyond fat-burners, way beyond everything on the market today.*

†The “546% more weight loss” claim is based solely on Zantrex-3’s active weight-loss component.

They do not specify which ingredient they are referring to, or what study this information supposedly came from.

Does Zantrex 3 Work?

We found no evidence at all to support the manufacturers claim that Zantrex 3, or any of its individual ingredients, causes 546% more weight loss than Ephedra. A lot of the ingredients contain naturally occurring caffeine, but the manufacturers have failed to inform the consumer how much caffeine is in each serving of Zantrex 3. Caffeine will help to boost the consumer’s metabolism slightly, but its effects are mild at best, and if the dosage is too high, consumers will experience side effects, including disrupted sleep patterns and jitteriness.

The use of guarana, yerba mate and damiana together is interesting, as there is clinical evidence to show that these three ingredients, when combined, do lead to weight loss; A 2001 Danish study of guarana, yerba mate and damiana showed that over 45 days, participants taking the formula lost an average of 5.1kg, whilst the placebo group lost an average of 0.3kg. However, no ingredient quantities were mentioned in either the clinical trial or in the ingredients list for Zantrex 3, and so it is impossible to know whether the ingredients are used in therapeutic doses or not.

However, there are other ingredients used in Zantrex 3 that have no relation to weight loss at all, such as Maca Root (which is traditionally viewed as an aphrodisiac) and Schizonepeta (which was used herbally to treat eczema and other skin disorders).

Rhodiola crenulata and Asian Ginseng are also used; these may reduce fatigue, and Asian Ginseng may cause slight decreases in muscle damage after exercise. These traits may be beneficial for consumers who are dieting and exercising regularly, but they will not aid weight loss directly.

The combination of guarana, yerba mate and damiana, as well as green tea and some other sources of caffeine may aid weight loss, but we believe that the use of so many sources of caffeine will cause side effects frequently, especially if taking the high daily recommended dose of 6 capsules.

What Are The Ingredients of Zantrex 3?

The ingredients used in Zantrex 3 are detailed below. The individual ingredient quantities are not listed, as the product contains a proprietary formula. There is 1160 mg of the proprietary formula per serving of two capsules. Consumers are instructed to take as many as six capsules per day.

Niacin 30 mg (150% RDA)

Zantrex®-3 Proprietary Blend 1,160 mg

  • Yerba Mate (leaf) Extract: There is diverse clinical evidence to support the use of this plant for weight loss, as it stimulates the central nervous system and increases the metabolic rate. It is also a source of caffeine, and so should increase energy levels. Read our full investigation for more information.

  • Guarana (seed) Extract: Contains naturally occurring caffeine.
  • Trimethylxanthine: More commonly known as caffeine. Numerous studies have shown that caffeine boosts energy levels and alertness, as well as mildly boosting the metabolism. The effects shown in studies are small, and some studies are inconclusive.

  • Damiana (Turnera diffusa var. aphrodisiaca) (leaf) Extract: Historically this plant was primarily used as an aphrodisiac. A 2001 Danish study of guarana, yerba mate and damiana showed that over 45 days, participants taking the formula lost an average of 5.1kg, whilst the placebo group lost an average of 0.3kg. The same study also found that Damiana had a mood enhancing effect, and so could potentially help to curb emotional eating. It has been found to delay gastric emptying, which could help to suppress the appetite.

  • Green Tea (leaf) Extract: Green tea is high in a group of antioxidants called catechins. Studies have suggested that catechins increase thermogenesis in the body, whilst caffeine increases energy expenditure by boosting the metabolism slightly for few hours.

  • Kola (seed) Extract: Kola nut has been studied in relation to weight loss, but in conjunction with ephedra, a substance that is now banned in the U.S due to severe side effects. As a source of caffeine, Kola Nut may boost the metabolism mildly. In animal studies, regular use of kola nut over a month resulted in a decrease in both appetite and body weight.

  • Schizonepeta (flower) Extract: Schizonepeta is used herbally in Asian medicine to treat the common cold, and skin disorders, including eczema. It is not clear why it has been included in this diet pill, as there is no evidence linking it to weight loss.

  • Black Pepper (fruit) Extract: Black pepper extract is used for increasing the bioavailability of nutritional compounds. In other words, it increases the amounts of nutrients that are absorbed into the body in the digestive tract. It may also increase the absorption of various drugs, which may lead to potential side effects.

  • Rhodiola crenulata (root) Extract: The Rhodiola plant is thought to increase endurance, based upon studies in rats, and is thought to be an adaptogen, as well as being used to treat altitude sickness, and reduce fatigue. However, much of the relevant information and studies have shown better results using Rhodiola Rosia, rather than Rhodiola Cenulata.
    Source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15500079
  • Asian Ginseng (root) Extract: More commonly known as Panax Ginseng. Panax Ginseng is associated with improved cognition in fatigued subjects and slight decreases in muscle damage after exercise. It also appears to reduce fatigue, and consumers report feeling calmer after consumption.
    Source: http://examine.com/supplements/panax-ginseng
  • Maca (root) Extract: A Peruvian plant that has been used for numerous ailments, including infertility and to boost the sex drive. No clinical evidence has been presented to support its use as a weight loss aid, or even to support its use as an aphrodisiac.
    Source: http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-555-maca.aspx?activeingredientid=555&activeingredientname=maca
  • Cacao (seed) Extract: Cacao seed contains naturally occurring Theobromine, which is a mild stimulant. Thought to be a much milder stimulant than caffeine, and is unlikely to have any significant impact upon weight loss.
    Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theobromine
  • Black Tea (leaf) Extract: A source of caffeine. Studies have also suggested that black tea leaves contain high levels of some polyphenols, which have caused weight loss in rats on high fat diets, by inhibiting absorption of fat from the intestines.

Does Zantrex 3 Have Any Side Effects?

There are numerous ingredients found in Zantrex 3 that could potentially cause a range of side effects. As the manufacturers have not provided the individual ingredient quantities used in this supplement, it is difficult to establish the likelihood of these side effects occurring. Having said that, we found numerous customer reviews complaining about side effects.

The Warnings label on the bottle states that the Zantrex 3 formula contains around 300 mg of caffeine per serving (of two capsules); this is an incredibly high dose of caffeine, especially in just one dose. The Mayo Clinic states that up to 400 mg of caffeine a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults, but some other medical groups state that up to 500 mg is acceptable. Considering that consumers can take as many as 6 capsules per day (3 servings), which would contain 900 mg of caffeine total, we believe that side effects are highly likely to occur.

Significant quantities of caffeine can cause side effects such as headaches, increased urination, dehydration, jitteriness, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, heart palpitations and problems sleeping. Green tea, kola nut, yerba mate and guarana are also sources of caffeine. Green tea can also cause constipation.
Consumers should drink plenty of water throughout the day, and avoid other caffeine sources to avoid dehydration and headaches. Consumers who experience insomnia or a disrupted sleep cycle due to caffeine use should either have their last dose earlier in the day, or should reduce their daily dose.

Black pepper extract increases the absorption of some medications and can therefore increase the chances of side effects occurring or even accidental overdose. Consult your doctor if you are taking any medications.

Maca appears to cause dehydration, and so should be taken with water. It may increase estrogen levels, and in post-menopausal women can cause hot flashes.

Schizonepeta is not suitable for anyone who has liver problems or liver damage.

Caution:
Not suitable for anyone under the age of 18. Not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Not suitable for anyone who is sensitive to caffeine and other stimulant ingredients. Not suitable for anyone with kidney or liver problems. Consult your doctor if you are unsure about the suitability of this or any other supplement for you, before purchase. Not suitable for anyone who has any cardiac health problems, including, but not limited to, high blood pressure.
“Do not take Zantrex-3 High Energy Fat Burner (red bottle) and original Zantrex-3 (blue bottle) at the same time. Do not substitute one product for the other. This product contains a significantly potent xanthine (i.e., caffeine and caffeine-like stimulants) mixture, of about 300 mg per serving. Consult your physician before use if you are taking caffeine-containing medications or if you are sensitive to stimulants. People sensitive to Niacin (Nicotinic Acid) may experience flushing of the skin that is generally mild and transient. Do not exceed suggested daily serving. Use only as directed. Keep out of reach of children.”

Are There Any Customer Reviews For Zantrex 3?

There are over 200 customer reviews for Zantrex 3 on the iHerb sales page. The reviews are very mixed, with slightly more positive reviews than negative ones, and an average rating of 3.3 stars. Zantrex 3 appears to be very popular in Korea, as 174 of the reviews are written in Korean.

I purchased this once I’d read all the reviews. However after three days of awful nausea I couldn’t take them any longer. It made my heart speed up and made me feel like I had severe motion sickness.

It takes away the appetite well. Not many side effects, except maybe a slight buzz in the head. I don’t take it at night because you won’t sleep. I will use it until I lose 15 pounds.

I’m 18 years old, weighed 238 and I am 6’2. Honestly, the results were better than I expected. I’ve been taking the recommended two pills before each meal and I’ll tell you, and I’ll be honest, you do get a burst of energy from the product, and you will lose weight. However the main side effects are feelings of nausea and diarrhea. I had to get over those two barriers, otherwise I’m happy with the product. I’ve been taking the product for upwards of a week and a half and I have already lost 8 pounds. I don’t exercise, and although it sounds bad, the nausea kind of ruins your appetite so your caloric intake will go down. I’m pretty satisfied with the product, but just a tip – you’re going to feel sick while taking it so eat light when you do eat.

These pills do not go down well for me. If I take one in the morning before breakfast then that’s fine but otherwise I feel so sick. If anything it will increase my appetite. I can’t say it’s helped me lose any weight because I haven’t been able to take more than 2 a day. I’m so disappointed, but this is my first time to take these kind of pills.

I’ve been taking this for 2 weeks but didn’t experience any rapid weight loss.

I’ve tried the ephedra version of Zantrex back in 2001 and it made me so nauseous that I lost my appetite for a while. So I was keen to try this new version.
Today is the 5th day of taking just ONE pill a day in the morning, 15mins before breakfast and I’m 1kg lighter. The results are indeed rapid but its not for everyone. I take the pill around 9am and by 1030am, my heart rate is faster and I feel a slight discomfort in my chest but its bearable. By afternoon, I feel listless and do feel a little worn out but still have the energy to function as per normal.
The positive side is that I eat as normally during meal times but I don’t snack or don’t have the urge to throughout the day. My appetite has definitely been suppressed (which is great).
This is not a magic pill and there are certain risks. You have to try it to know if it suits you but do NOT take 2 pills a day at the start or you will get the jitters bad. Take one a day to try it out first and build it up from there.
Don’t forget to cut down the sugary sodas, fried stuff and carbo too. With a little more activity, the fats will fall off.
I read somewhere that if your weight loss lasts longer than 6 months, then it would be harder for you to pack back the pounds so good luck y’all!

it really works, I lost weight very easy and smooth. This supplement suppress the appetite without making me nervous. I was fighting with my 4-6 pounds with no results for more than 4 years, supposed it was related to the age…I am 45, but this one works really nice. I have ordered it first 4 months ago and took less than the suggested intake. Recently I got my 3 bottle. I love it!!!!!

  1. Why Becuase it worsen what I was feelin before i had some type of stress disorder that I wasn’t proven by my docter if I had it .. And now I stopped taken it ever since then I have rapid heart beats out of the bloom and I get this tingly feeling in my brain and causes me to panic and I feel AMA just go crazy I haven’t gone to docter to check my blood or brain ect whatever is nessary to stop this out of the bloom heart rates and panic headaches thing i felt I was goin to overdose but I try to controlled it thank god I did ! Becuase I felt I was goin to blackout ! Am seein a lawyer for sure how must I know how much of caffein is in it or if it’s safe or if it was labeled not Safe . For anxiety disorder people might Worsen”” I cud of avoid some type of pill like this .

  2. This pill is the worst ! Exactly I took it three four days ago I never thought Becuase it doesent have the amount of dosage of caffeine in it why I don’t know if I could of been aware .. Of how much of caffein is in it and telln my doctor if it’s safe for my height or age etc I could of avoid it

  3. It works for me like a strong coffee works for others. Gives me lots of energy (caffeine) for around 5 hours per pill and curves my appetite for the same amount of time. I sit at a desk for a living so it really makes a difference in my productivity. Also, the cost per pill ($0.24 each) is more cost effective than anything out there in the market.
